Robbie-T @ Waterloo 5K Classic + shirt pics

Postby Robbie-T » Sun Jun 21, 2009 9:21 pm

Hot day, couple tougher spots on the course, one hill to run twice. Tight starting area, tough to get off to a fast start. Final km was zig zagging through the end of the 3k race. RunWaterloo puts on great races but the awards ceremony always goes on forever.

I learned a lesson today, if I want to run well in a 5k race I need to take it as serious as any other race, I'd never go into a marathon like this, I need to respect the race if I want to excel, just because it is shorter doesn't mean it can be taken lighter.

I knew today wouldn't be a PB, but wanted to be a bit faster, the first few kms I felt pretty strong, 5:55 first mile. the last km I felt dead. Only one kid passed me at the end and I passed plenty so the effort was there, just not the speed.

Had fun with the kids on fathers day, and wore my custom designed race shirt by Kylar in the race.

19:13
21st overall
2nd in my age group

So for the day and the preparation I didn't do so bad. Good news is my cold is almost over and I'll be ready for the Twister.

Not much time in a 5K to think your way through strategies so it's good to see you stockpiling experience. Bigger picture: this short game is eventually going to boost all your other racing paces.

Still an impressive result to go along with the AG award. I only dream about those times.

That is still a great time even if you didn't have your "race face" on. It's good that you still take away something from each race. See you and your yellow Elixir's at Twister.

Hey, yeah that's pretty decent especially since you're sick. Rest up and let's see a sub 21 on Sunday! Or maybe sub 22.

Running with a cold will slow you down a bit.... Be proud of your age group placing. Congrats.

Another one in the books; solid performance and gets you ready for the Twister! As an aside, 5k is about the only distance I'll ever be able to say I can finish within a minute or two of Robbie-T :D

Time to start running intervals!

It was a hot day for racing yesterday, plus you've been sick and just raced earlier this week. If you want to do the workouts, I'm sure you'll break 18.
2009 Highlights
Marathon - 2:54:05 (Mar 22 - Tokyo)
Half - 1:20:00 (Apr 26 - Hartwell)
5k - 17:09 (Acura 5k - Jul 19)
800m - 2:16.80 (York U - Jul 28 )
Now - Getting back my running fitness
My training log

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

"There are two types of injuries that we older runners get: those that we can run with and those that we can't. And if you're over 30 and don't have one or the other, you aren't training hard enough." - Younger Legs blog

Whaaat? Robbie-T is human? He suffers from the heat and illness just like the rest of us, who knew? Age group award on a tough day, there you go.

I agree, that heat can make a huge difference, especially when youre body hasn't had a chance to get used to it. It sure did slow me down in Ottawa!

Great placing in the AG Robbie! You are right, a shorter distance doesn't make it easier.

Don't be hard on yourself. Its no big deal if you slow down a bit...its liberating. In fact, slow down a little more, say, in Minden.
You'll feel better.
So...ummmm...where is Minden (no reason, just curious)
