MrsStrider’s unplanned & unexpected PR @ The Army ½

Postby MrsStrider » Tue Sep 22, 2009 6:36 am

Chip Time: 1:42:58 (41 second PB)
Conditions: Perfect
+ Things: Jolt, throw away bottle with e-load, Maniacs on the course, David @ the Finish!
- Things: Blisters, Stitches
Stats: F40-49 / AG Placement 22/619 & 90/1925 Gender Placement

Well, I hadn’t planned on writing a RR. I hadn’t expected a PB. Life has a way of surprising you at times, both good and bad. Well, this was outstanding for me. My main running goal for this year was to qualify to run the 2010 New York Marathon. As I planned to run the Ottawa ½ in May, I focused all my efforts and training on qualifying there ‘cause then it took the pressure off the summer coming up to the Army ½. So, when I met my qualifying time in May, I stuck to the plan and enjoyed the summer. When we came back from holidays in August, I pulled out my old training program and realized that I only had 6 weeks to prepare for the Army race. I followed the last 6 weeks of a 12 week program, but I felt slow and sluggish right up until the race. For 6 days before, I fought a cold – popped ColdFX, increased my inhalers and sniffled lots. I literally had NO expectations going in and this would be my first ½ without David pacing me. I decided that my goal would be to finish smiling and run strong. Time didn’t matter.

The morning of the race, our friend Bill came to our house, we grabbed our throw away clothes and we headed downtown. I was a bundle of nerves. I wasn’t sure if it was the Jolt or the double inhalers that were making me jittery, but I was really worked up with performance anxiety. And then it began. It was such a perfect race day – nice cool temperature to start and very little wind. Strider and I kissed goodbye, wished each other luck and then the cannon went off. I started out kinda fast, but felt good so I just went with it. I had figured that I’d aim to run 5 minute kms. I had my Garmin display set to show: Distance, Time, Lap Pace and Average Pace. As long as I kept my average pace at 5 minutes/km, I’d be happy with the finishing time.

The first 8 kms went by pretty quickly. It was incredibly touching and inspiring to see runners pushing others in wheelchairs. It gave me strength. At 10k, I felt so much better than I had felt at 10k in the Ottawa ½. At that point, I knew that the Heron Hump was coming up so I took my gel and just kept putting one foot in front of the other. As I was starting to feel fatigued, I slowed my pace a bit, but I was still averaging 4:48 per km. Once I got to the top of the hill, I felt confident for the rest of the course. However, at 13k my baby toes started to hurt and mostly my left one. I could feel the blisters growing and the pain got worse and worse. I kept telling myself to ignore the pain and just keep pushing. Around 17k, I decided that it was time to toss my throw away bottle which had proved to be a godsend as I was able to run through every water station. At 18k, I was hurting a lot and I was starting to feel very tired. Shortly after that point, I heard my named called and I look over to see some wonderful Maniacs cheering – Jesse (Scrummy), Carrie and Jess (JLA). Gawd, it was great to see you guys. It really gave me a boost! Thank YOU. I picked it up a bit after that until I started to get a stich on my right side. But at 20k, I had very little left. Again, I just kept moving. At that point, I knew that I would PB and I wanted to give ‘er everything I had. When I saw the finish line, somehow I managed that last little kick that I love so much and I finished at a 4:14 pace. When I crossed the line, my Garmin read 1:43:02 and the official time was 1:42:58…. Sweet! I was shocked, but incredibly pleased. And, I finished with a smile on my face. Official goal reached. And to top it off, David was there at the finish line and he had had a wonderful race too. Our friend Bill reached his goal of qualifying for New York so that we can all go to New York together. It was an awesome day.

I love the Army Run. It is a wonderfully organized event and I love knowing that everyone out there is running to support our soldiers and their families. How could that not be perfect?

Solid race Kim. Must be a great boost for the home stretch before NY.

Always fun to read your reports.

Awesome race Kim! Congrats on the PB - it must feel even more fabulous to know you accomplished it all by yourself! I saw you just before the finish line and you were kicking up your heels - you looked strong and focused. Enjoy New York!

FYI - Kim ran this as a NY qualifier for 2010. She still has another year of training to get to that finish line - build the base, build the base.

Unplanned & unexpected PR for you, but not to the rest of us. A good running base, good running weather, and a good racing attitude (i.e., go hard but no pressure) inevitably leads to a good race.

Fantastic...awesome.
A new PB...a new Puppy...sheesh...what's next??

You remind me a lot of one of Steve Boyd's athletes (he's a top Master runner) and coaches his Physi-Kult team out of Kingston. Agathe started running in her 40's and ran a sub 3:06 marathon for her first full last year at PEC.

I believe we're gonna see you contine to rock on and improve!! :D
