HCmD Struggles Through the 34th Annual MCM

Postby HCcD » Sun Oct 25, 2009 2:05 pm

When I registered back in April for the 34th Annual MCM, I had hopes of this being my key event/marathon for 2009 ... After a year of marathons in 2008, and a tough injuried plagued Goofy Challeng in January, the focus was on 1/2 marathons this season while recovering from my AT and closing off 2009 with MCM as my only marathon for the year ...

Unfortunately, as the months progressed, my training, or there lack of, proved to be the downfull of my 2nd MCM ... plagued with my AT issues all year, I was able to build back up my fitness for the 1/2 marathon distance with strong efforts, but with a lack of long runs, only 2 runs over 30K+ since ATB in March, I had a feeling that it was gonna be a struggle from the get ... With an ambitious goal of 3:45:xx as a Gold, and sub 4 hour as a silver, I managed to only pickup a Bronze level with a 4:12:xx on this day ...

Managed to hit the 1/2 way mark at around 1:52:xx, but after that I just ran out of fuel, and my AT started to feel it and at the 26K mark a group of spectators decided to dash out across the road, about 3 ended up running behind me/ us and one ran straight infront of me, and I literally T-Boned her    by the 30K mark, I was just out of gas and started running 10&1's and then 5&1's over the final 10-12K ... Did not want to push the envelope so I just put it into cruise control and ran and walked when I could over the final 5-8K ...

After I finished, went straight to my hotel, fortunately, it was only about a block and change away from the Finish Area, showered and changed, and had some lunch, then head back out to the Finish Line Festivities and found myself at the Michelob Beer Tent ...  I think I set a PB there, with 3 15oz of beer in about 15 minutes ...

Anyhoo, time to rest and recover and start my final 10 weels of training for the 2010 Goofy Challenge in January ....

You T-Boned a spectator and set a beer PB... sounds like a good day.

Andy.

Tough day at the office, but as usual you seemed to find some fun in it! As you say, another prestigous MCM under the running belt.

Good luck with your recovery for Goofy!

Yep, tough day at the office. I hope you knocked the spectator on her ass. Now, get healthy and get some long, long runs done before Goofy!!

I kept channeling you this morning on my own long run. Sorry it got so tough for you bud.
Lets get out there soon and hopefully you'll have a good bit of training in for Goofy.

Starting a fight with a spectator, you're in the wrong sport Andy.

Congratulations on a great effort!!

I bet the spectator learned her lesson! Still a very good result considering the AT and not feeling well this week. Rest up, Mickey and the gang await!

Good job toughing it out Andy. I was quite shocked in Chicago how many spectators kept trying to dash across the moving mass of runners to get to the other side of the road. More than once I had to jump out of the way. There were moments I was tempted to body slam someone but the risk wasn't really worth it.

So, tell us more about the race itself. Would you run again? Was there good crowd support? Details!

Thanks everyone ... :P

And, yes, definitely would run it again ... not exactly the fastest course but a technical course ... and, absolutely one of the best crowd support and course supported races that I have ran it ... 12 water stations, with over 1300 Marines on the course and 2000 throughout the race weekend, and 30,000+ runners, along with their family, etc., major crowd support along the course, where it counted ...

Have absolutely no complaints on this past weekend's event ... Definitely, a 'Must Do' marathon event, being the 5th largest marathon in North America and 10th in the World ..... Apparently, it only took 6 days to sell out this year ...

I agree with Ian...I'm especially impressed with the beer PB considering you don't drink much beer usually...mind you I think you've been ramping up your beer training this season :D

C-Moss and I will be up to Ottawa in the next couple weeks and you can tell us all about your race during a Bruce Pit walk :D :D

Tough run, Andy. I know all about that AT pain and there's not much you can do when it hits...other than take it out on a spectator. So, another "bling & schwag" race done. Now rest up & heal up for the ultimate b&s race in a few weeks. What's with the beer chugging???

Another race bites the dust... Sure mention your beer PB, to distract attention from the real problem/addiction...

When I first read this, I thought it took you 4km to T-bone her. No wonder you were out of gas.

You T-Boned a spectator and set a beer PB... sounds like agood day.

What he said +1

but with a lack of long runs,

Yup, had that problem myself last weekend as well. I have however simply decided to do more of them.
Given the number of races you've done it's clear you can and will do moer as well as you train into 2010.

Happy training, good luck with your injuries
