Lisa's 'fun times' at ATB report!

Postby purdy65 » Sun Mar 27, 2011 3:59 pm

For some reason, each year, I tell myself this course is not all that hard - maybe a way to mentally get through it. Forget about it. This is a hard course! At least 10K of constantly rolling hills and, of course one HUGE hill at 25K

So now when anybody asks, I'm no longer going to say that it's not that bad. It's challenging!

Having said that - I wouldn't miss it! It's too much fun meeting up with Maniacs and RR friends!

The day started off with 3 RR friends and I heading out to Hamilton. It was COLD, a bit windy, but really sunny. By racetime, it was very bearable, and I was well dressed (maybe a bit too well). Conditions were definitely NOT an issue - at least for me.

The first 10K was awesome for me. Done in just over 55 minutes. Right on track. The second 10 was done in 56:13 and the final 10 done in 57:30, so considering the hills, not too bad as far as pacing, but boy did I fight for those hills!

This nicest part of being part of the running community, is how many people I run into who recognize me, and say hello. I ran into at least 4 or 5 friends on the course. The best was when I ran into a friend from the RR with 1K to go. I asked him how he was doing, he said really well. I said 'let's carry each other in' and that's what we did. Finishing a very fast final K and giving each other a big hug at the finish. So nice!

Then, of course, it was nice to hang for a bit and see how everyone did. Seemed to me, that there were way more people in Copps this year. The course was also more crowded than I remember. I had trouble getting any traction the first few Ks. Corals are definitely needed in this race, IMO.

Chip time was 2:49:15. Good for close to a 2 minute course PB, so happy with that, but I still wonder what more I have to do to run this course a bit faster. BUT, this is where the chip time fell today, and I feel like I definitely gave it my best.

I'll probably be back next year! :D

2 min PB is awesome. so was the finish. it's nice to have a little something left in the tank. and no the course isn't challenging - if you regularly run 30k with hills at the end to make it even more fun  that's no easy course. well done!

I'm not sure you want to be much faster in March, unless ATB is your goal race for the entire spring. Your pacing sounds perfect, given the terrain of the course, and so your mileage base and execution were assets for you. All that's left is to be able to start faster without fading later, and this entails the kind of speedwork that hurts a lot and takes a long time to pay dividends. Instead, imagine yourself all tapered up on a flat course on a slightly warmer morning holding this pace for just another 12K. It won't come easy, but this 30K PB should inspire you about what kind of marathon time you have in you on a good day.

Congrats on a great race!

I've never run ATB before so I'm just curious about this hill that everyone talks about.
How do you compare that hill with the one at Toronto Goodlife Marathon near/at Hoggs Hallow?
Is it longer/shorter/steeper etc...

Thanks!

Thanks everyone!

Hey Rambo. I'm very familiar with the Hoggs Hollow hill, since I live quite near there and train on it. I have always said if you can do that one, the ATB hill is not problem, BUT! Hoggs Hollow comes in at the 4K mark and ATB at 25K. And truthfully ATB is both steeper and a bit longer.
