and I ran around the bay

Postby Doonst » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:21 pm

Around the Bay 2011, my 6th time in a row. You have to sign up so early for this race of 7,000. So once again I did. I wasn't well trained this year; after a solid January the next 2 months were a bit off. I had 3 separate sore spots come and go, not quite injuries but I was paranoid of them becoming so. Also I had a few distractions. I tried to keep on the right side of the fine line between cautious and lazy, but no question I took my eyes off the ball. With 2 weeks to go, my latest ailment faded and I had one last chance to make it work. As late as a week before race day, I figured there was about a 25% chance I would finish, if indeed I chose to start. Semi-healthy and under trained, I didn't cancel. Hit the expo Friday night with Robbie-T, good to catch up.
It was a fine day! Great people, nice weather if a bit cool, and easy enough logistics for a big race. Not racing it, I was there mostly for socialism. Hung out with lots of maniacs before and after. Most of the race I was with CasualRunner. For the first 8 K we helped hold back AlfieFromPickering from going out too fast as he sometimes does. Came upon UltraQueenga just before halfway and ran with her for a bit. Saw Mark1 at the relay checkpoint. It went surprisingly well up to the 20K mat. We were kicking along faster than I had a right to hope for. Into the hills, though, and a couple of recent pains came back with threatening twinges. I had no problem taking it easy, especially since I had only run over 20 K once this year, back in January. My knee was worrying me, especially on the many downhills. One guy, liberal with his comments, said I should maybe see a separatist about it before it coalesces on me.The goal here was to finish. Saw Casual last at the 25K point, just before the big hill. It was handy that I know the course so well, I just had to bring it home. Slowly, but running, I came in at 2:53. Most minutes ever, yes I said that last year too. Good (if slow) times!

next up:

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Still a solid effort, despite all the issues that you had to overcome in your limited training, Sheldon ... Congrats for toughing it out, and helping a fellow-Maniac staying honest for the first part of the race ...

Also, always great to see you again, at the races .. :P

Yep. Doonst, Robinandamelia, and I crossed within second on the clock!

Nicely done Sheldon! I think you and I criss crossed once or twice. I'm sure I passed you once, but then you must have passed me again at one point, because you gun time is slightly ahead of me.

Nice to see you again!

Taking it easy, being under trained, just there for the event, yep, check mark me for all 3 of those as well.

Saw you and Wesley right before the gun, had I known you were taking it easy I would have spent the morning with you!
I was assuming you'd blow my doors off, like you did all last summer. I should have shallonged you ! :)
Like you my longest runs have been 20k or so.

Good luck with the rest of the season.

It was a pleasure and a great motivation to run with you for most of the course. You had surprisingly great race considering your low millage training this year. I think we both would finish much earlier if we didn't run so fast trying to help Andy for the first 8K. It is great that you finished healthy. Wish you fast recovery and injuries free season :)
