Breaking through On Canada Day

Postby DougG » Fri Jul 01, 2011 11:25 am

I haven't run the Barrie Canada Day 10k in a few years, although it is always a fun event. The were a lot of people in the 5k & 10K, plus the walkers, and many people were cheering us on. The route is 2 laps of 5k along the waterfront, which is spectacular.
I had a decent week, with a couple of good runs, and I was confident going into it. I rode my bike to the start line, which took 15 minutes and was a good way to get my legs warmed up. Despite that, my legs felt a bit heavy this morning, so I tempered my expectations. My plan was to not start out too fast, and just maintain a solid pace. Nothing fancy, just run steady.
As usual, the first km was fast (5:02), but I expected that. I felt great and figured I would run by feel and see what happened. The second km was 5:06, which surprised heck out of me, but I was feeling ok, although the legs felt funny. I finished the first loop in 25:20  -a pb! Ok, I thought, just keep going, my chances of a pb were looking good. Other than a 15 second walk break at the water station I managed to keep a steady pace. Each km passed and I would check my watch and shake my head. I crossed the finish line in 53:20, a pb by over 2 minutes :D (the pb was set in 2006), and 3:17 faster than my race June 5. :D I ran a solid, steady race; my last km was 5:05, which surprised me.
It felt good to break through.
Time to enjoy my Canada Day!

Congratulations!

By the way, had you approached the timer with, say, a spare $20 bill, you may have had a 3- or 4-minute PB. :D

Thanks guys. I rechecked my numbers and realized that my 5k split time was not quite a PB, it was 26:12,  meaning my second 5k was 27:08, which is more consistent. That's ok, I stll have my 10k PB :D It feels good to break a mental barrier and show progress.

Jim, was that you at the start making announcements with the megaphone? I thought you looked familiar, and had I known I would have gladly slipped you that $20.

That is really nice consistent running Doug. I think you can get a lot of confidence from a result like that and push on and get even faster times.

Well done!

Nice!!! That's a great pb. And a 5K pb also! I think you need to try for a sub 25 5K next- it's there for you for sure. Congrats... 8)

Good for you! The DoubleBellyBuster and I did the race as well. Tough course when there are tons of people walking in front of you pushing baby carriages and being oblivious to the race going on.
