CMMH's MEC 10K

Postby chunkymonkeymelonhed » Sat Feb 23, 2013 2:43 pm

In an effort to keep my half training interesting I decided to throw in a couple of races. The first one was a 10K today in North Vancouver.
It was a well organized small event put on by MEC. After horrendous weather the past 3 days the forecast said that there would be sunny breaks today. Yeah, right I thought. Turns out the forecast was bang on and we have blue skies and SUN 8) . The race took place in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, a gorgeous spot in North Vancouver at the base of Mt. Seymour. It was a bit chilly when I arrived so I kept on my long pants and jacket while I warmed up a bit. About 10 mins before race start I dropped my top layer and made a visit to the malodorous outhouse. The course went out 5K on a paved service road and was hillier than I had anticipated. I have done zilch in the way of hill training so far and as we started up the first incline I was a bit nervous as to how my legs would hold up.
I really had no plan for this race other than to push myself out of my comfort zone. I like my comfort zone, I have become very comfortable there. But I know that I will not improve if I remain there so today was the day to take the first steps out of it.
No watch, I was running by "feel" again. The speedsters took off quickly and then the next group of us fell into a good pace. I passed a couple of people and was passed by several more. We seemed to reach kilometre 2 fairly quickly and then the aid station at 2.5K. Right after this we started on a pretty good uphill. YIKES. I was scared. I had a good chat with myself, the initial inclination was to walk, but that would have been in my comfort zone so I decided to screw that and keep running. Rollers for the rest of the way to the 5K turn around. At about 4K the leaders started to pass us on the way back. I decided to started counting how many women were ahead of me. Just before the turn around we had to cross a little bridge that was covered in slush and was quite slippery. Reached the turn around and took a sip of water at the aid station. Three people passed me and I figured I was 9th or 10th woman at this point.
I came up with a goal of moving up at least two places before the finish. I set my sights on two girls who I had been pacing off of for the first half of the race. They were about 75 to 100m ahead of me and were giving each other some competition. Reached 7K and knew we had a nice downhill and now would be a good time to close the gap on these two. By 8K I had them and had now found my next target(s). There was another woman, who had passed me early on and who I had lost sight of, and two men running in a group just ahead of me. Perfect, move up one more place in the women's category and have the opportunity to chick two guys before the finish. Another hill, not steep but it seemed to go on for awhile. I was hurting but I was determined. At 9K I was almost with them and at 9.5 I was running alongside them. Time for a final kick and I passed all 3.
That was FUN :D I could hear the woman trying to stay with me, I could hear her footsteps just off my left shoulder but I was not letting her in front of me. Forget about it.

After the race she came up and told me that she tried so hard to get me back but she had nothing left. I thanked her for pushing me and congratulated her on a good race.

Time was 52:43 for a 5:16/K pace.
Not a PB but I am super happy with this result on this course. It is a solid improvement over my time in November and I'm looking forward to the next one in April which will be the course that I set my PB on two years ago. It's a flat course, not one hill so I am hoping to knock some time off today's result.

ETA- results are posted and it turns out I imagined chicking one of those two guys. He got me by a second. I should have tripped him.
7th woman overall which is not all that impressive now that I see there were only 20 women in the race

That's some nice racing especially on no speed work. Well done picking off those people at the end. You're off to a great start this year!

Well done Cheryl, a very impressive result for a hilly, but very scenic and beautiful course. You had perfect conditions for the race.

Are you interested in a 5K time trial? I’m signing up for the St. Patrick’s Day 5K in Stanley Park on Mar 16th. It’s a fun race, the food is great and they have GI beer available after the race.

Terrific race, Ms. Melonhed! You certainly gave some of those racers the what-for! Congrats on being 7/20. I have been 104/104! Your report was fun to read, too.
