I am not sure how to write this race report because I really upset at myself right now. I had signed up for the Tely 10 since I was going to be in nfld and it was a fairly easy course. I didn't really train much but I did 12k last Sunday so I figured I would be fine. The past week has been brutal in St. John's with temps with the humidex in the low 30's. Thr weather for race was supposed to be 17 and cloudy, not too bad.
Got to the race start at 7:15 and was feeling pretty good, it was warm but there was a breeze. A first for me this race was that I would be running alone. I did meet up with some friends but they are faster than me. I started out fine and felt good and reached the 5k mark at 34:00 which was good. I made it too the half way at 52:00 so I knew I was doing fine. I met DW and DS at the 10k mark and was way ahead of my goal at 1:05. That's where it all fell apart. I felt a twitch in my right calf so decided to try and walk it off. It did not work so I stopped to stretch and was able to run another 10 but when I stopped for my walk break both legs cramped. I kept walking and tried to run unsuccessfully. I walked the 4k till almost the finish and at 200 metres decided to run for it. I finished at 2:05 which was 20 mins over my goal time but I finished.
I guess I am disappointed that for the third race in a row I have had issues but I did finish and I pb'd a 10k. The next steps is to figure what's going on since I thought it was hydration and it's not, don't think it's the shoes either.
Now I can relax and enjoy vacation, someone pass me a beer

Congratulations on completing a tough ten-miler. Those calf cramps sound miserable, but you stuck it out. Now enjoy your vacation!

I think this might be part of it... maybe went out too fast? The unexpectedly warm weather probably played a part too. Either way, congrats on finishing!

Good job! You can only do what the body gives you for that particular day.

Glad you had a 10k PB.
I don't think there's much more to "what happened" than you started too fast and then fell apart. Well you started at about 6:30/km but then sped up to 6:00/km which you couldn't sustain- but it's ok to push and test the limits sometimes. Calf cramping is usually due to over-exertion-- been there and done that.

I wish I could say that it was that easy because I felt fine except for that. I actually looked at my garmine tonight and I still had a average pace of 7:45, which was not too bad considering all the walking

Your PB for HM was with 7:20/km average so I think the lack of training at the speeds JWolf mentioned (6:30 and 6:00 [your second 5km was 31 minutes]) did you in. You said that you felt fine and then it happened all of a sudden, and that is classic going out too fast.
McMillan calculator suggests a 10 miler of 1:56 for you based on your HM race from May. http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/
So 1:45 was a very ambitious goal given the lack of training.
I'd put some tempo runs into your training at 6:15-6:30/km [1km easy warm up and then 3km @ 6:15 followed by 1km cool down] as you progress you make the tempo portion longer or faster or both.
Good luck.

Feeling otherwise fine until calf-cramping sets in is pretty common. One weak point causes fatigue and forces you to slow down.
Believe me- I've been there!
Don't over think it- just run more.

Sorry about the cramps, but congrats on getting it finished under those conditions.
Re: Mixed emotions - newbie's Tely 10 milers
First off… congrats on getting another race under your belt. It was not the result you wished or wanted, but you stuck with it and got it done and that in itself is a victory! Enjoy that beer, you deserve it!
I’m with mas_runner & Jwolf here. The lack of quality training may have had a factor in your finish. Going out to fast is also not a good thing. Hydration could have been a factor, but I don’t think that was an issue. BTW, there is also such thing as being over hydrated and be mindful of that in your next race or long run.

Thanks for the great race report. Don't try to overthink the race, there will be faster times to come. I think the Tely 10 miler is pretty hilly too.
If you have to ask me why I Run, You probably wouldn't understand!
Re: Mixed emotions - newbie's Tely 10 milers
Congrats for finishing a tough race!
I am planning on doing this event next summer with my friend BumbleG who is from Nfld. We are trying to get a crew to go down with us from K-W.
Again - congratulations on toughing it out. good luck at getting the calf thing sorted.
