10 times @ Egg Nog Jog

Postby Robbie-T » Thu Dec 12, 2013 4:10 pm

My 10th Egg Nog Jog, and another shot at sub 40 min goal. This year the weather was as good as it could be, many times the race has been icy or snowy, so just being -10C and dry was good.

I arrived early to get a good parking space, then went out for a 3k job, talked to Thomas a guy in his 20's that beat me by about a minute last year, he was 40:03 last year and has run low 17min 5k, 36min 10ks, and 1:!5 half, so I felt I would try to run with him in my sights and hold on as long as I could. At least have something to chase out there.
Then came back to car and got prepared. 15min before the race I headed to the start, did a few pickups and found a good spot near the front.

And we are off, immediately I find Thomas and we are shoulder to shoulder, the first section is downhill, I want to go fast but be in control and not burn out. Through the first mile we are 5:20. We head through Terra Cotta make the turn up the escarpment and start attacking the rolling hills, we are still side by side and pass a few guys that went out too fast and were started to feel the effects of the hills.

About 5k in just before the HILL, he pulls ahead and I stay on his heels and use him as motivation to climb that bugger. At the top I work on recovering quickly we move shoulder to shoulder again, but there is still plenty of climbing to do. At about 7k, I take the lead this time, there is another guy up in front and I focus on him, and pull away from Thomas without looking back to see where he is. At 8k we get back on the road and start to make are way back, at 9k I looked back to see if anyone was close and no one was in sight. I'm not making any real progress catching the next guy in front of me but I push to keep with him and do my best to pick up the pace. Through 10k I was 38:34, at that point I knew sub 40 was out of range, but still had a steep down hill and a kick before I could say I was done.

I finish 41:11, it wasn't meant to be, but I think I finally realized that the last 3k is were I need to be quick to have a real shot at sub 40min.
This time gave me 7th overall, 1st Master and 1st in my Age Group
Solid run and happy to still be racing consistently, oh yah this year I beat Thomas by a minute ;-)

Got changed then went in to get warmed up and eat, talked to Sandra and Robin, grabbed my prize and headed back home.

Over the last 10 years here is the progression in my results.
