Robbie Burns Run

Robbie Burns 8K Run - Burlington, Ontario – January 26, 2014

This was the third year in a row that I had run in this local classic. It was “Robbie Burns weather” as they said at the awards presentation. It was sunny and the wind was lighter than predicted, thank goodness, but it was COLD! At race time, the temperature was between minus 14 and minus 15 degrees with a wind chill of minus 19 to minus 20 degrees. As usual, a quality field from all over Ontario showed up. So an AG placement was not in the cards once again.

My training this year had gone well except for the cold weather which meant that I had to do more treadmill running than I would have liked. Given the weather forecast, I knew a PR or equaling my time from last year was out of the question. I had taken a guess as to what I should wear, never having raced in such cold conditions. I didn’t want to over dress but I certainly didn’t want to under dress either as I really feel the cold. I wore nylon wind pants over my tights. That was an excellent idea!

Ed Whitlock acted as the official starter! Needless to say he got a big cheer. I took off with the thundering herd and part way up Brant Street I realized that this was going to be a tough race for me. My pace slowed through the second and third kilometres and I tried to pick it up a bit through the fourth and fifth kilometres. Then, the going got progressively tougher because of fatigue and a head wind. My heart rate was getting higher and my pace was slowing. I managed to hold it all together until the finish in a gun time of 41:45 and a chip time of 41:36. I finished 7th out of 15 in the 65 to 69 age group. My results were more or less as I had expected given the circumstances.

Thanks for reading.

Yes, there was piping at the exit door urging the runners to get out to the start. Sorry no haggis but there was hot oatmeal! The lineup for brown sugar, raisins etc. was too long for me and the oatmeal was kind of plain so (wait for it) I crumbled up a chocolate cookie and mixed it in. It wasn't bad! There were costumes too but some of the regulars failed to materialize although to my surprise I was passed on the course by a young guy wearing a viking-type helmet with horns, a fur sash, some kind of fur-covered shoes and carrying a sword and shield! That was one fast warrior.
