As usual, I was quite anxious about this race. I get this way before every race as I only race about three times a year. My training had been going alright but not great. I didn’t think I could match last year’s finishing time but I would give it my best shot.
The weather was perfect with a temperature of 14 degrees and little or no wind. The first stretch down to Lakeshore Rd. was the usual stampede with me in the middle, running way over my head but with a heart rate that stayed in control this year. The first kilometre took 4:24, money in the bank. I wanted to maintain a pace of 5 minutes per k or a bit better for the whole race. It was hard work but I managed to do so, just focusing on my breathing and form. The run was very hard, maximum effort, but I managed to hold it together for the duration. My heart rate was climbing gradually during the race and I had to measure my effort in the last kilometre. With half a kilometre to go, I kicked for the finish with all I had left, passing two runners in the final fifty metres. I crossed the line and kept walking trying not to barf until things settled down. Ah … the 5K … still a treat!
I managed a first place in my AG, men’s 65-69, and was to discover that I was the only runner in my AG which was sort of disappointing. My time was good enough however to have placed second in the men’s 60-64 AG which was sort of gratifying.
Thanks for reading.

I'm glad to see that your leg is slowly getting better. It's been a long haul.
