pressure cookers vs. crock pots

Postby Jwolf » Mon Nov 10, 2008 12:41 pm

I notice a lot of discussion about crock pots (slow cookers). Does no one use pressure cookers anymore? I don't have either, but if I were to get one, I'd get the pressure cooker. My restaurant-chef friend is a big fan of them because they use a lot less energy and she says you can use them for just about any stew, curry, etc...

Any comments?

I love my pressure cooker for brown rice, risotto and beans from dried. I make different things in the crockpot, like apple butter, butternut squash and curried soups. For anything that has spices that "infuse" through the dish and develop over time, I would pick the slow cooker.

So I like them both, just for different recipes.

Ditto - I use both but for different things.

I love my pressure cooker for swiss steak and for beets. I should use mine more often though. The noise of it is a bit of an issue though. It drives our dog nuts!

I confess I gave away my pressure cooker when we did our Renno. It always made me nervous. I think that's because when I was little the top of my grandma's blew off and hit the ceiling. Petie her Budgie (who was out of his cage at the time and perched on the rim of a glass full of water) freaked and fell into the glass.

He was not amused and evidently went back in his cage and sulked for the rest of the day.

I have both, but mainly use my pressure cooker for quick recipes/suppers.

I have a really yummy porcupine meatball recipe that I do in the pressure cooker that I really should make again cuz the kids love it and it's been a while.

I guess having enough toothpicks is not a problem.

People still use pressure cookers for food? I thought they were only used for meth anymore.

Head down to Walmart and buy two pressure cookers and then count the number of police cars that drive by your house afterwards. You'll see what I mean.

And whatever you do, don't use your Airmiles card when you buy your crockpot, especially if you're buying camping gear at the same time.

My mother has a pressure cooker. The only thing I have seen her use it for is cooking potatoes. It's so big and heavy she can barely lift it now. She bought it when she and my Dad got married -- 57 years ago!

Strange but I never had any desire for one.
