For the people who have made these, how do you store them?

I thought I would cut them into bars and wrap them in wax paper, then put them in a container in the fridge. :?

How long do they last?

Ditto, I use a semi-spherical tablespoon then roll them. We call them Lara Balls.

3 batches got me 26 bars. All wrapped separate, labeled and stored in Tupperware in fridge.

I have some in the fridge that are about 10 days old - they still seem good. I've never had them longer - they get eaten!

I can't imagine there is anything in them that would go bad. Especially if they are kept in the fridge.

10 days! I'm lucky if they last 2!

Does anyone have a good recipe that's not based on dates?

When I was processing my apricots for my granola I thought they might be a good base. (I think La mentioned it upthread). You may have to add a bit of water just to get them mushy enough to stick.
I'm going to try craisins and apricots combined for the base, with almonds next time.
You could do it first.

Prunes would be good, too.

aren't those just dates with bugs in them? ;)

P.s. I hate figs more than I hate dates. :)

Then I'm thinking lara bars arent for you. :P Try the chocolate brownie ones though you can't tell it's dates.

Thank you for posting the recipe and alternate suggestions. I buy Lara bars because I rarely get time for lunch and they are almost all gluten free (I have celiac disease). I usually buy them in the states where they are cheaper. The "flavors" posted here look much more interesting than the Lara bar flavors. I'll try them later today when I get the ingredients lined up.

Just made my first batch. The dates I used are quite moist so I mixed them with some drier figs and chopped mixed nuts (salted because I always think the salt is missing and I love salt). They turned out great so I'm going to cut and wrap them tomorrow. Thanks again for posting the recipe.

well I was hoping for recipes that weren't necessarily mimicking Lara bars completely with the figs and dates :)

seriously? granola bars use oats and grains and are more like cookies.
that's not what I meant.

i have seen some recipes that use other dried fruits as the base.

Just teasing you Jen! ;)

I've never heard of Larabars that weren't based on dates (not even figs).

So your question, to me, was like do you have a milkshake recipe without milk; by definition it's no longer a milkshake!

But if you do find any recipes, be sure to post them here. I'd be interested in trying some.

:)

Some of the recipes I've seen seem to use raisin syrup, which doesn't sound any more appealing.

I think what I'm looking for is actually something closer to homemade Cliff Bars, which do have some grains but not as much as granola bars. I've found a few recipes and might do some experimenting this week-- I'll post them after.
