Vegetarian/Vegan Marshmallows?

Postby pts » Sun Feb 27, 2011 1:55 pm

Can anyone recommend a brand, or have any idea where I can get them? Especially mini-marshmallows, since I like to use them to decorate things.

I sort of 'ignored' that marshmallows were not vegetarian, until last weekend I had to look up 'how to make marshmallows' on the internet. I think I am off regular ones forever.

Google search gave a whole bunch of recipes and sources....

I know that Natalie orders hers on-line, but I can't remember the name of the brand/store.

Hopefully she will see this thread or you could send her a message on FB.

I know this girl has made marshmallows before:

They have them at our local organic grocery store but can't remember the name.

They have them at health food stores here.
If you eat fish there are also kosher marshmallows made with fish getatin.

I do eat fish occasionally but the whole gelatin thing is so gross!

My mom used to make gefilte fish- the gelatin is just the protein that comes off when you boil the fish. It would separate out when the gefilte fish cooled.
I don't see how it's any different from eating fish in general.

I agree. What's gross about gelatin? I understand not wanting to eat gelatin if you don't eat meat. But if you do eat fish, then I don't see the problem with fish gelatin. Fish stock (or any stock made from bones) will have gelatin in it naturally.

I know that, but to me mentally there is just something different about me eating the fish 'unprocessed' and the thought of someone boiling the gelatin and then putting it into marshmallows. I can't explain it, it is just the idea of removing a fish product and shoving it into marshmallowy goodness- it is sort of the difference between conciously deciding to eat fish, and having fish 'hidden' in food that has nothing to do with fish.

I use Dandies marshmallows - I buy them through my coop group. Packaging looks like this: http://vivagranolaveganstore.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=463

I know my closest natural food store also sells small and large ones in bulk - but I've never looked at the brand or pricing.

Dandies are great for hot chocolate, Sweet and Sarah are great for a dessert treat. Both are now available in Winnipeg without having to order online... HOORAY!

Kosher marshmallows are vegan. I used to get them at a Kosher deli, I bet health food stores would have them too.

There are probably several different kinds of kosher marshmallows, but the kind I've seen had fish gelatin.

But I haven't looked in a while- I don't use marshmallows that often and just buy the non-kosher ones. But now that I'm switching to mostly vegan eating, I'd like to get the vegan ones. Did you get them at Omnitsky's?
