Pressure cooking

Postby Spirit Unleashed » Fri Jul 22, 2016 2:22 pm

During Prime week, I got a good deal on a pressure cooker. This is my first ever pressure cooker.
Today I successfully cooked brown rice.
Tomorrow, I'm going to try beans (I need to soak them tonight).
Any tips? The recipes all look like you can have cooked bean in just a few minutes.

It's amazing. There is an Instant Pot recipe group on Facebook if you're on there.

We usually pressure cook hard veggies (beets) and beans. I can't think of anything else that comes to mind. We use the slow cooker function more often. I like the saute feature to braise beef before making a beef stew in the winter.

Sorry, no help here. The only thing that I have use a pressure cooker for is to heat military field rations. I have always had a healthy fear/respect of pressure cookers.

Good luck!

Yes you really can cook beans in 25 min in a pressure cooker. They came out good.
It actually takes a little longer because the 25 min doesn't start until pressure is reached; then you need to let it cool down before venting or you get a big plume of steam out the valve.
The result is that the beans are made and already put in the freezer instead of still cooking.

So now I have moved the rice maker and the crock pot into the back closet and I'll only keep the pressure cooker in the kitchen. I needed to stop using the old rice maker because you couldn't clean under the seal and so mold was growing there. But the new pressure cooker, you can completely remove the seal to wash and dry. So my impulsive Prime Day purchase is working out.

A friend of mine cooked beans in her pressure cooker and it exploded. Not sure what she did wrong. Maybe she didn't do the "cool down" part?

There are varieties of pressure cookers: electric vs on the stove. Also, if you fill it more than half full, the beans swell beyond the capacity of the pot.
Mine is electric and it monitors the pressure and temperature.

That picture...priceless. Surely the cooker could have been plugged into another outlet instead of trying to draw from the stove

I bought an instant pot on Black Friday and still haven't used it! I need to take some time to sit and figure it out, and I just haven't. My dad saw something about them on tv the other day (I didn't realize it was a Canadian product!) and said there were so many safety mechanisms that it's almost fool proof. We'll see....

Sicilian Vegetable Medley. The recipe is in the Instant Pot direction book. But I didn't follow it exactly. Instead of potatoes, I threw in a package of apple/sweet potato/onion/herbs that I bought in the store produce section.

I should add that I got a lecture from the company PA that I shouldn't cook vegetables in the microwave and then put butter on them. I do think the pressure cooker "sealed in flavor" much more than boiling.

Why did they say not to microwave and then put butter on vegetables?

She felt that microwaving was making veggies tasteless; and that butter is bad for cholesterol.

Older pressure cookers weren't electric. They used the stove for heat.

I knew that as my mom still has one. My point was, there is a cable going from the pot to the stove...why not plug it into a standalone outlet

i think that's from the coffee pot. that doesn't look like an electric pressure cooker.
