Doonst makes out okay in hometown 5K

Postby Doonst » Sun Apr 18, 2010 10:17 am

Spring Into Motion 5K is put on by our local running store Feet In Motion. It was the scene of my first ever race in 2005, and I returned in 2007 to run my current PB of 22:02. My main goal for road races this year is new PBs, and I thought this one was soft enough that I had a shot. 21 minutes was sort of my "B" goal, I didn't think I was ready to pull it off just yet.
It was a blustery day, 25 K north west winds. I really wasn't feeling well this morning so my hopes weren't all that high by the time I got there. My normally rock solid stomach was acting up. Started out into the wind for the first quarter of the race, helped keep my pace level through the race, no sub 4 splits today. I sure didn't feel very fast out there, but the numbers came in okay. Splits all 4:15-4:20 except the 4th which slipped to 4:26, about how it felt. Never fast but consistency saved me, for 21:37 total, a PB of 25 seconds. Nobody got passed me after the first bit, but I didn't pass anybody after the 1 K mark. I was following a couple of guys for the first half, but they slowly pulled ahead in the second. I finished 12th overall out of 118 finishers.
Quite a haul, too for my $25 entry fee. Everyone got New Balance duffel bags in their race kit. I won a $35 gift certificate from Feet in Motion for coming second place in my age group. Then I got a draw prize, I picked a LG cycling jersey tagged at $80. All in all a better day than I figured when I woke up this morning. My first PB in almost a year, the floodgates are open! I still think I could do closer to 21 minutes on a good day, but I'm happy with that.
next up:

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Way to go Doonst. It's when we least expect those PB's that they seem to turn up. Congrats on the age placement. Draw prize too. I'd say this was your event, and maybe you should go purchase a lottery ticket. Looking forward to many happy race reports from you this season. Thanks for sharing this with us.

WOW Doonst!! Serious jets you strapped on today.
I know you were disappointed with your ATB, but this is one heck of a way to kickstart your season. By the looks of things, I'm going to be chasing you around the trails this season.
