Official 2010 Doonst Sulphur Springs Report.

Postby Doonst » Sun May 30, 2010 3:48 pm

This is my fifth time running Sulphur Springs, right back to the 10 K in 2005. The last 2 years I've had good races, running with/ against Casual Runner. This year was the big shallonge, with Casual, Doonst, b_squared, Mid_packer, and AirForceRunner all able to contend on a good day. AlfiefromPickering was there too, and dgrant. Others doing greater distances.
I'd been a bit off this last month, with some minor soreness leading to paranoia of injuries. This led to no real long or tempo runs for weeks. One thing I learned last year is that staying healthy is job 1. Still I was feeling okay by race day, who knows what shape I'm in though, healthy at least. Lots of talk about the weather leading up to the race.

So there we were all in one place. Fun hanging out and spewing advice as the wily veteran before the start. We take off and as usual I head out pretty hard. It felt good so I figure why not. First split 4:24. I was leading the shallonge, I figure to throw a scare into the newbys and see who stays with me. Well I got my answer, it was b_squared. I thought maybe Air Forcey but it was not his day. At 2.5 K there's a turnaround and we see who is how far back. Up the steep gultch, by this time chatting with Bryan. By the mat at the start again around 4.5 K , my time of 24:17 was best ever. As usual I am also racing my previous times. Now the big loop and I settle down a bit. The next 5 were easy, its downhill even if you don't realize it. More chatting with b_squared. Starts to warm up in spots. At 8:30 AM! This race is always hot, just like Ottawa Race Weekend. Still it could have been worse like just 3 days before. After the turnaround at 11 K, we did start to slow a bit. Again if you look at the elevation profile, here it quietly heads predominantly uphill, climbing 100 M between 11 and 15.5 K. Sneaky. I see now that I was loosing time here against my previous years races. I felt pretty good though, all things considered. A couple of times Bryan asked if this was the big hill, I said not even close. At 19 K we got there, its still big or long at least. Not too steep, with several plateaus, but it has at least the total rise as the more famous gultch. Then a nice breeze going along the top beside some farmer's fields. I tried to take a run at Bryan here but I don't think he noticed. So then I tried some psychological warfare and this worked much better. I knew going down the big hill around 22K that I wasn't doing as well as the last couple years, usually I love this part. Still we're almost done, and b_s is struggling too I can tell. He asked when the gultch was coming up way too early. Coming into the finish I did try to surge again, no Bryan didn't notice this time either. I swear he held up so we could cross together, what a way to make a mockery of shallonges everywhere. No prisoners!
Crossing the line I got very hot in the sun. Headed straight for shade and took a minute to recover, but then I was fine and got my water and food. Unlike some I did not lose weight, and headed off to pee very shortly after finishing. More than anything the soles of my feet hurt. Checked the times when they were posted: b_squared 2:18:43, Doonst 2:18:43. No tenths. They did list him first in the standings, plus he as much as waited for me. So I started to say that I lost, by zero seconds. Yeah that's the best I got. Still that's 4-5 minutes off my last 2 year's times. Who knows how much is greater heat etc, and how much is lesser condition this year. I want to be faster than me.
The high point of the day for sure was hanging out with the gang after in the blazing sun. It sure did heat up, thanks again for the beer Bryan. Sorry that not everyone had a great day. Saw bgroot, WestGrey, and UltraQueenga go by.
A day later now I feel fine. I was a little worried about my knee after the big downhill at 22 K. I do want to put something in my report in hopes it helps me remember. Last year after a good race here, first tempo run 4 days later had me limping from a sore achilles all summer. 4 weeks ago after PYP 25 K, first tempo 4 days later lit up both calfs, my achilles, and my chronic right knee. I had to postpone my 10 K PB attempt twice this month because of. So no hard runs for a while, too risky at my advanced age. Still, it would be nice to get that 10 K race in next weekend...

Nice report Sheldon! I think the difference between this and last year's time is likely down to conditions? Either way, look after those legs - there's a lot of season left!

Zero seconds, hey since they didn't have any chip time starts (everyone get the gun start time), you can say that he started just a bit before and you caught up !

Thanks for your on site advice and info about the course. I'll see you at ITT if not before--my next trail is the July practise run at the Toad.
