Boston Marathon qualifying articles

http://www.boston.com/sports/marathon/articles/2010/12/19/baa_is_caught_in_a_numbers_game/?page=full

After numerous meetings and research, the BAA has narrowed its options to what race director Dave McGillivray called some “necessary adjustments’’ and “a few innovative approaches.’’ The final formula will involve a combination of adjustments to the qualifying standards, field size, and registration start date and window during which runners can qualify. It is highly unlikely any form of lottery will be instituted.

(in 2010), the BAA granted non-qualifying invitations to 5,740 runners in a field of 26,790. The invitational entries, priced at $250 each (nearly double the $130 fee for qualifiers), were distributed in allotments both massive — 1,000 to principal sponsor John Hancock, 500 to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 498 to foreign tour operators — and minute enough to accommodate privileged runners connected to the BAA and its partners.

Thanks for that Sheldon. It will be interesting to see what they decide. I hope that people that think they qualified for 2012 in September-December can still get in, but since they are changing the qualifying times and the qualifying window, it is now up in the air.

The new plan will be phased into effect beginning with the 2012 marathon, with the qualifying window for that race under review. The BAA’s intent is to honor qualifying times run in what has been the traditional window, which opens in mid-September.

I think that means that they will honour current times run this fall.

Ah- it looks like it. That's good. I missed that part on my small screen- thanks.

Very happy for Cheryl and Lorne and whoever else has qualified.

I am expecting to find out that I missed my chance to qualify in 4:00 in the F45-49 age group. Oh well- I'll still get there. :) It will just take a bit longer.

Thanks for posting this. I am hoping to qualify for Boston in 2011. Right now that would require a 3:15 because I will be 35 on race day in 2012. I will be keeping an eye on this situation.

That is just excellent news! I hope to run a strong run in Vancouver but it would be nice to know that I won't need it. I imagine the registration process will be just as crazy or more so because people will not want to miss out on the "easier" qualifying standard.

Best quote and so true:

“I don’t want to eliminate the sense of runner euphoria when they cross the finish line of a qualifying race and they look at the clock and see a time,’’ said McGillivray. “I don’t want them to cross the finish line and say, ‘I hope I’m in now.’ You’d like to structure this where you run a certain time and you can start celebrating right away.’’

BTW, it looks something like this

What this means is that if you ran in fall 2010 and you have a time that qualifies for 2012 based on previous qualifiying times, you are likely ok.

Now that I know some people to team up with, it far more likely I'd come. Doing it by myself never appealed to me.

I'd be interesting in attempting to qualify for it some time, but not run the Boston Marathon. The time-limit 3:10:59, is just hard enough such that it would be "very difficult" but not "impossible" to reach for someone at my ability.
2013 GOALS:

- Compete in the "Early Bird Sprint Triathlon" in May
- Run a 5km pb during the "Bushtukah Canada Day Road Race"
- Complete an Olympic distance triathlon
- Cycle > 33 km / hr during the cycle portion of a Sprint Triathlon.
- Stay healthy and happy

Races

April 28th: Manotick 10km (40:16)
May 18th: Ottawa Early Bird Sprint Triathlon (DNF)
June 8th: Riverkeeper SuperSprint (2nd overall)
July 1st: Bushtukah Canada Day 5km (18:37)

Wait till January to see if that qualifying time gets shorter. ;)

Complicating potential adjustments to qualifying standards is the BAA’s desire for gender balance. Last year, women made up 42 percent of the field with their numbers expected to increase as overall female marathon participation grows. Among 18- to 39-year-olds in the 2010 race, female runners outnumbered men, 5,942 to 5,455, perhaps hinting at an area where qualifying times can be toughened.

We should start placing bets on what the changes will be- the winner gets all-you-can-drink-free beer at the marathon of his/her choice.
I am betting on these:

* tougher qualifying times for younger women (under age 45 - 50)
* first dib for speedier runners (those who qualify with more time to spare)

Place your bets
