Robbie-T @ Mississauga Marathon 2011
I never really felt fresh this race, I went in with a goal to get under 3:00, but with the weather and everything else I'd take what I got and just run a marathon.
The beginning never really seemed easy, I had moments of clarity but was not confident I could hold any pace for the entire race. I saw Dee cheering at the top of the hill and I felt ok for a bit, however we started to feeling some of the wind. My stomach was unsettled and I had gas throughout most of the race, maybe took in too many carbs before the race. I kept trying to take in water and gels anyway because I knew if I didn't I'd pay for that later in the race.
At 15-17k my legs where feeling heavy and my pace was bleeding, I wasn't losing too much ground to the guys in front of me but I didn't feel right and just decided to run by feel, when I felt good pick up the pace and when I felt rough hold back a bit and don't push and don't worry about it.
I rolled through Half about 1:28 not so bad, but I new that was the easy half and the second half was hillier and for the most part into the wind. I decided 3:05 or so at this point I could be satisfied with.
I hung on to a few guys through the middle part, seems like it was a masters race because every guy around me seemed older then 40.
With about 10k to go I started to start pushing a bit more and with 8k to go I made a move to catch a couple guys that recently passed me and I started to make my push for the finish. I was making ground on a bunch of guys, I was feeling sore and beat up by then but dug down deeper. With 2-3k to go a few guys came by me, I have no idea where they came from but I was having none of that and passed them all again in the final km.
With about 500m to go I heard a guy yell something about sub 3, and I looked at my watch, I hadn't really looked too closely at it lately because I was resolved that I would be over 3 hours. I really had a chance at breaking 3 hours, I was shocked, I didn't think I was pushing hard enough but I guess I was. I saw another RM cheering section that almost missed me, and booked it for the finish, and I did just make it 2:59.
The weather wasn't terrible, the temperature for me was great, the rain was only light for the race, only issue was the wind for the finally 15k especially down by the water and along Lakeshore.
In the end I had a pretty decent run, the first half felt mediocre but I'm happy with my push at the end and determination I showed myself to never give up. I'm very happy with my result on this day, I surprised myself. My oldest son told me to run like a champion today, I feel that is what I did.
2:59:23
17th Overall - slower time but a better placement than last year by one spot
17th Male
8/115 age group (my age group was totally stacked this year)
5k Splits (better than I thought they would be)
5 = 20:39
10 = 20:33
15 = 20:55
20 = 21:21
25 = 20:51
30 = 21:42
35 = 22:21
40 = 21:53
41 = 4:12 - hammering home
42 = 4:01
pace for .2 = 3:21 - passing one more guy and finishing strong

Totally awesome, Robbie-T ... Though, I assume that you will be officially bumped to 15th Overall, with the DQ's that may be pending ??

That's a really strong race for what you had to work with. After ATB, it's only fair that you ended up on the good side of the round number this time.

We almost missed you because we spotted our friend Brian in the distance and he was just behind you (likely one of the "old guys" you leap-frogged with; he won the 50-54 AG). It wasn't until you were right in front of us that we saw you.
Well done, RT!

We're going to try this new thing called jogging. Or maybe it's yogging-with a silent "j". Apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.
