Thanks for the updates Lesley. Less unhappy than totally wasted. 12h25 on a day as hot as that was about all I could hope for.

When I saw you cross, it was with lots of other people (everyone seemed to finish in packs!) and it looked like you kind of got tied up with a few other people in the melee to run through the tape and get medals, etc. If I'd had a rough day, I'd have looked pissed at that, too.

Just did a look at the last few years of stats - thinking that this was an exceptional year for DNF's because of the heat, but not really the case - 2009 was the worst - that was the year with the smoke that blew in from the forest fires.

2011 - 234 dnf's of 2832 starters - 8.3%
2010 - 125 dnf's of 2732 starters - 4.6%
2009 - 224 dnf's of 2605 starters - 9.1%
2008 - 144 dnf's of 2211 starters - 6.5%
2007 - 142 dnf's of 2588 starters - 5.4%

2006 (the year I did it) - 176 DNFs of 2352 starters - 7.4%. I found it quite hot that year.
2005 (the year I spectated) - 185 DNFs of 2247 starters - 8.2%. Also a hot year.

There were fires in 2003 as well, but only 4.7% DNF'd that year (including my friend Marissa).

not at the time. could be because he stumbled right at the finish and was scooped up in a wheel chair to the med tent.

he spoke to the race director last night at the dinner. she was full of excuses - powerade instead of gatorade meant athletes took more water, and that it was hot so athletes were using it to cool themselves. really - how unpredictable! as she put it "well these things happen - just like a flat." not really the same.

then he spoke to the CEO - he should be able to get his finisher swag tonight when he takes the Things to the volunteer dinner.

Yikes, not a good PR person, I guess?

It seems pretty inexcusable. I'm also really surprised they used Powerade.

Anyway, I'm glad he'll still get his finisher's swag. :)

They switched from Gatorade to Powerade? Why is that? Is that just IMC or all IM races?

ETA: things have kind of gone downhill across the board since Graham Fraser sold all the IMNA races to WTC. I thought IMC was not included in that sale. Who runs it now?

It wasn't Powerade. It was Ironman Perform Sports Drink made by Power Gel.

They''ve been using it at all WTC events now and we were informed of this months ago.

my info is all hearsay and filtered through an addled brain so i should stop commenting. it is still somewhat predictable that a product change could result in more athletes wanting water.

Yeah, even though people knew well in advance (I remember another friend talking about some fancy enhanced IM drink which is why I was surprised you said Powerade), it's not surprising that many people would plan to take water instead and take with them what they regularly train with.

I think this "enhanced" drink has been around for over a year. When my friend Marc did IM Lake Placid last year I believe they were using it. I know he got a bunch of it sent to him for free by someone earlier in the summer so he could try it out. I'll have to check with him about who sent it to him.

They were also promoting it heavily at the Boston expo this year. Not sure if it's available here - is it?

Some people take the "nothing new on race day" thing a bit too seriously (if you're dehydrated, drink what's there, FFS). But then again, most people I know who are hobbled at IM get that way because of stomach issues. I'm generally fine with any type of hydration/nutrition, but I certainly prefer some things over others.

what was most disappointing for mr seuss was that the Things were holding the finish banner on the last shift so he missed out on that and a finish line photo.

Two local retailers, Speed Theory and Tri It, were carrying the powder mix here. I heard that the Running Room was/is stocking it, but I didn't see it at their stores.

I used it in training - it's not overly sweet and I like it better than gatorade.

The info on it is here: http://www.powerbar.com/products/365/ir ... -lime.aspx
