Lisa's two runs down Yonge
On an absolute whim, I registered for the Yonge St 10K yesterday. I guess it was something about the forecast for 25km/hr winds out of the Northeast, haha. I have been back training again for probably 3 weeks after some injury/health issues forced me to take quite a bit of time off in Jan/Feb and run slowly for about a month. It will suffice to say that I wasn't expecting a PB, not by a long shot.
I went out really hard, the 40:00 group passed me at about 1.5km. I figured I'd just run "stupid" and go as hard as I could, forget this pacing BS. Just see how fast I could run. I was doing pretty well till 3.5km or so when the 45:00 bunny passed me... I got a bit discouraged and slowed a bit, especially since the one hill on the course appears about there. However, Pat, who was running with me and wearing my watch, told me that my 5K split, even after slowing down, was 22:14. So lesson learned... I should've either worn my watch, or asked Pat what my pace was at 4K, because the bunny was clearly off. I was encouraged at that point and picked it up again- I saw a couple other people wearing the dorky compression socks that I had on, so I tried to pass other "sock girls"... I saw a guy from the Beach RR that I knew and passed him. Then at 8K my lack of training hit me... the downhill hit me... and my quads pretty much seized up. I had a rough km!! The Beach guy passed me, as well as another RR girl I recognized who had beat me by 30sec at the Hair of the Dog race. I pulled it together though and had a better last km and a strong finish. 45:24, I'm OK with it. It at least shocked my body into running faster again, and hopefully it will give me a bit of a kick-start. My fastest run in ages has been one run home from work last week (just under 11km) at 4:50/km- back in the fall I was routinely doing that run in 4:35-4:45. So I think my legs were kind of like "WTF??!".
I'm signed up for the Sporting Life 10K on May 13, and I do think I can go faster as long as it's not hot. I have to say, though, that the Canada Running Series did an absolutely STELLAR job with today's race. It was really great. I'm kind of expecting the Sporting Life 10K to be a bit of a gong show after this... I hope I'm wrong but CRS really knows how to handle a big race (even though this was 1/3 the size of Sporting Life last year). It was actually really nice that it was a bit smaller... I'm sure CRS doesn't agree, but as a runner 15,000 people is kind of a lot and it's much more comfy when it's 5 or 6000. I arrived, got a portopotty in less than 10 minutes, checked my bag with no wait (it would have been kinda nice to have been able to check my bag closer to the start time, as I froze my ass off for 20 minutes, but I understand it takes them awhile to get down to the finish). I walked right into my corral. When I registered at the last minute, it was no big deal to be put into the front corral. I didn't wait at all for my bag at the end, and the finish area was clearly marked.
All in all, a good day!! Racing is fun!!

Re: Lisa's Yonge St 10K
Yeah... that race is a tricky one to pace though, because there is so much downhill in the first 5K that it's SO tempting to bank time. I definitely went out too fast, no question there! I think the key for me is better TRAINING, which will continue over the next 3 weeks! Hopefully on May 13 I won't blow up at 8K the way I did today, and that alone would get me under 45. Holding strong before 5K would've probably gotten me another 20-30 seconds. However I ran my PB on that course in 2009 and I had been running a LOT but nothing fast enough to suggest I'd run the time I did (42:43). So since then, the last 3 years I have just tended to go out hard in the hopes that maybe I'll have another magical day.

Re: Lisa's Yonge St 10K
I've noticed a lot of runners have a hard time on the downhill portions. I've done some downhill work in previous years but not this one, but that small training seems to stick and I've been able to pass a lot of people when the pavement starts to decline (in fact at St. Patricks, I dropped the leading female on the slightly downhill section ).
That 42:43 performance sounds like it'll be tough to be beat. Keep it up!

You had an amazing performance despite your modest amount of training. You'll definitively improve your time a couple of weeks from now in the Sportinglife 10 K !!

Way-da-Go, Lisa .. glad to be reading that you are back at it and racing again, on a regular basis ... That 10K distance has always been the trickiest for me, as well .... Just go out hard and hang on for dare life ...

Good for you for getting back at it! It must be sort of encouraging that a bit of time off didn't seem to really hurt you. I'm sure once you get back to regular training you'll be back to your old times! COngrats!

Awesome run, Lisa! Once you're back into your regular groove for training, your race times will be golden! (Not that they aren't aren't already but you know what I mean!)

Re: Lisa's Yonge St 10K
That's an impressive performance on so little training and after going out so fast. I suspect you will do a whole lot better in three weeks time though, like you, I am a bit concerned about the number of runners.

Congrats you had a great result. Some races you just have to go for it, like you did! 10K's are a good place to try that! You pulled it all together in the end and that's awesome! Congratulations.

Re: Lisa's Yonge St 10K
Besides your fast start, since you signed up on a whim I'm assuming you also didn't have fresh racing legs so you still hung on to a nice result. At your upcoming race I think you'll be closer to your PB time than 44:59.
Re: Lisa's Yonge St 10K
Congratulations. Well done!
