Doonst returns to roads

Postby Doonst » Mon Oct 22, 2012 8:36 pm

I did a half marathon yesterday, the Base Borden Run for Operation Hero. It was held on the grounds of CFB Borden, on the roads to and around the range. Being my first real road race in a couple years, I was a little nervous. Pleasant temperatures for running but it turned out to be quite windy. I picked 1:45 as my "A" goal, partly because it was a nice round number, a 5 minute pace.
Started out for the first 5 K at goal pace but I could quickly tell I was working too hard to do so. It was all straight west right into the headwind. Then it got hilly, and I paid for that too. After 6 K we did a 9 K loop and then back again. Second half I just faded away. Average pace after 5K: 4:56; halfway, 5:04; by the end it was 5:20. That is a 1:52:20, not only 7 minutes over my goal but 15 minutes over my PB. It felt rough by the end too.
Heather and a friend did the 10 K in 1:07 and had a great time. That's good for her right now. Then we went for lunch in Barrie but I was a little rattled and sore. And maybe a little disheartened.
I know it was partly the wind and hills but mostly the state of my current fitness. I sure have the DOMS this afternoon too. It used to be so easy! I'm already thinking of when to get my revenge.

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

I am thinking of putting that on a tee shirt. I remember when 1:50 was a good training run pace and now ...

Even if you are disappointed in your fitness, you still gave what you had on that day.

I still think you have great legs.

Good to see you working your way back. No sense comparing these times to the old PBs, you're in a new era and get to start a new record book. (Besides, some of those old PBs may be tainted on account of artificial fashion enhancements.)

Well done Sheldon. I have run the Borden races the past couple of years (usually the 10k) and always enjoyed it. It's much smaller than Ottawa of course, but being on the base and seeing the tanks & guns adds to the atmosphere. Congrats on getting back it it! :D

Black Rm shirt is 6 years old! It was an armed forces base so I was trying to go in under the radar.
