Them seconds Hurt!!
Oh man back for another year, ATB #7 my goal sub 2:00
Training went well, I changed it up a bit this time around, I ran everyday since Jan 1, ran more mileage, avg about 13k per day. So went into the race feeling strong and healthy all good signs. The weather was about as good as it gets for this race.
Arrived early at the race, chilled out, prepped for the race and caught up with some friends.
Race started good, hit my paces 3:5x, wasn't hard wasn't too easy, just coasting along.
Through 5k in 19:48
At about 8k I took a gel, then it seemed like everyone was slowing so I took the lead of our little group and pushed the pace along the lake.
Through 10k in 39:24
Through 15k in 59:06
Still hitting the same consistent paces, and didn't see anyone from this group again until about 18k where the hills started and they caught back up to me to join me. Through 20k in 1:18:48 (according to garmin)
This is where the race starts, I started leap frogging with the girl in pink socks, I'd pass her on the up hills and she'd pass me on the down hills. It helped for motivation, and we seemed to be catching up to many people.
At 25k I'm still good, I feel I'm still strong and all I need to do is hold it together and I'm good.
Through 25k 1:39:05 - I've been losing a few more seconds then I thought I had through the hills, passing people makes you feel like you are going faster then you really are.
Up the hill and a 3:55 and 4:17 km then 3 more km to the finish. Which everyone says is downhill, but is always the hardest 3k for me, it is always against a stiff cold wind.
4:05, 4:01, 4:00 I can't get it going any faster. I thought I was still good, until the 30k point out front of Copps and I still had about 200m to go (maybe longer cause garmin lost contact when I went inside). I ran another 54 seconds after my watch hit 30k, which ate up all my 'extra' time. When I saw the clock it was 2:00:02 already. Less then .5 seconds per km faster, that's all.
I did know the course was long, I knew my garmin always logged this course long for me, and believe me I cut every corner possible, I believe I did all I could today.
It is always a fun race, and always a great challenge, I'm happy with my effort and my race just not over the moon about my time.
You can see I wasn't super pumped after this race

So. Darn. Close.
You certainly do not look happy.
Did you end up passing pink sock girl?
Another opportunity next year, perhaps.

She had a good lead on me after the hill, I caught her and passed her the last time at 2k and yelled at her to finish hard. She passed me at about 1k and beat me by about 10seconds, she's was over 2:00 too.

It's hard to bemoan seconds, but when you run as fast as you do, those seconds sure do matter! Sorry for you that you didn't hit your goal. Still a great result, though!

btw...Randy Zabukovec from Kingston.....you generally run neck and neck with him (if I remember he's usually a few seconds ahead) ended up running seconds slower than you.
Knowing Randy he's as ticked as you are about not going sub 2!
You're a speed demon...so seconds count!

Re: Robbie-T @ ATB 1013
Lol you win the shallonge!
I guess we were neck and neck for a bit.
My 10k - 39:20
15k - 59:31
20k - 1:20:11
30k - 2:02:32
I couldn't hang on. After about 17k or so I couldn't keep up the pace. You must have passed me around 14k or so. I was wearing black with a yellow singlet. Blue and orange shoes. Though I barely remember anyone but a few. You were probably part of the group that started to pass me around 13kish. It went back a few times again with the hills with me too.
After the grated bridge, my legs were starting to give up a bit, and by the first major hill at 20.5k I gave in a bit. I kept some life and pushed hard down into the valley but totally gave up on pushing hard up that last one. I totally agree with you on the last 3k - so much harder than it seems! My garmin 910xt with the altimeter shows there's actually an incline from 28-28.5k. Okay its about 5m, but it certainly affects you.
I think I'm up for racing together or a shallonge for next year... I definitely want to go sub 2.
Great racing.

Re: Robbie-T @ ATB 1013
This race always seems to end up coming down to a few seconds for you. As usual, you laid down a gritty and experienced effort, and things are looking good for what I'd assume to be a spring marathon buildup.
Re: Robbie-T @ ATB 1013
Great race report. Damn fast time in my books.
If you have to ask me why I Run, You probably wouldn't understand!
Re: Robbie-T @ ATB 1013
Very impressive. Your speed and consistency over the years is admirable.
Re: Robbie-T @ ATB 1013
Ouch, those seconds do hurt.
A strong, consistent result either way. You're not slowing down yet.
