Toronto: Indoor Track Meet this Saturday (Feb 22)

Postby La » Tue Feb 18, 2014 9:44 am

The Toronto Triathlon Club is hosting an indoor track meet this coming Saturday from 1-4PM. It's at Monarch Park indoor track (Coxwell & Danforth area). Cost for TTC members is $10, $25 for non-members.

Events are:
400m
1 mile
3000m
4x400m relay

Details and sign-up here: http://www.torontotriathlonclub.org/cal ... =2/18/2014

I'm not sure which two races I'll be doing (you select your top three preferences and you get two of them), but I signed up for the mile, the 3000m and the 4x400m relay. Should be good for a laugh if nothing else! I haven't run in a track meet since high school (and even then I wasn't any good).

That's right around the corner from me - but I'll be at the zoo, doing a 3k with my 6-year-old.

Looks like I'll be able to run in all three events if I want to. I have to decide which I want to do.

I did the mile. I didn't have it in me to do anything more than that as my lungs were burning after and I was coughing. :?

There were three heats, based on expected finishing time. I was in the first heat and there were three of us. One lady took off like a shot when the gun went off, but I knew there was no way I could stay with her, so I didn't even try. The other woman was pacing off me (which was annoying because she was virtually glued to my left side, which made taking the shortest line around the corners a bit tough. After our second time through the finish line (so, about 625m from the start), I started to pull away and she couldn't keep up anymore. After my next lap around I saw that she had pulled out of the race. I tried to increase the pace for the final lap (loved hearing the sound of the bell!), but I didn't have a lot of energy left and my breathing was laboured, so I expect that I wasn't able to pick it up by too much.

I wasn't wearing a watch, so I don't know what my split times were. When I asked them for my finishing time I was told it was 7:55 (I think that's a 4:58/km pace, which is my downhill 10K PB pace). I'm fine with that. If I'd been healthy and had actually trained for it, I might have been able to take 10 seconds off that time.

Cool!! Good for you. Can I convince you to try some masters events with me this summer? The atmosphere is super positive and fun.

Sure, as long as they have heats for slower people.

They do for sure. The ON masters site says the twilight meets are on Tuesdays, and the championships are July 12-13, so the twilight meets will be sometime before that. Pat figures May. I'm thinking seriously about it... if you get the ON masters membership ($50) the races are very inexpensive. Plus if you do various road races (e.g., Bread and Honey) you can get awards within ON masters. B&H is the 15K championship. There are championships at other distances too.

After going to a few meets with Pat, I'm still a BIT intimidated but excited. It is truly a very encouraging atmosphere. I only say it's intimidating because there are several super fit older people who would kick my barely-master ass!!! That's ok though, lol. Neither of us would be DFL in our heats. I'm ok with being last as long as I'm last with a bullet, lol. I'm considering trying the 800.

As an aside, the builder of the indoor track at Monarch Park was there on Saturday talking about the facility. He's always asked why it's only 372m (in lane 3, following the red line around the corners) and not 400m and he said it had to do with the space they had around the track. If they'd made it bigger, the dome would have been too wide/flat and snow would have piled up on top, risking a collapse. Given the amount of snow we got this year, that was a good decision! And as I learned during the ice storm, they have a back-up generator in case of a power failure, otherwise it would collapse if the fans turned off.

They now have indoor bathrooms and change rooms, and the showers will be up and running shortly.
