Dyslexic luddites of the world, untie !

Postby MrBond » Sun Mar 09, 2014 4:39 pm

Prompted by jarbeck's post today in general running discussion regarding issues with his Garmin - are we becoming too dependent on electronic devices to inform us down to several significant digits what we're doing ?

I have just a watch, while most of my running friends have Garmins or such - what's wrong with lacing up your shoes, and just getting out there ?

End of rant, please return to normal programming...

I'm with you on the low-tech. Some runs I don't wear a watch at all, and when I do, I seldom look at it. I'd also argue that while a Garmin can record several digits of data for a run, these aren't always "significant" given the technological limitations of the device. All that said, live and let live.

meh. I don't really care whether other people want to wear a watch or gps or not. It doesn't affect me. :)

I wear a garmin because I like looking at my trail routes after! Do I *need* it? Of course not, but life is more fun with it.

Running is for enjoyment. So do whatever you want that lets you enjoy it the most. For me, I enjoy data and technology. Sometimes I enjoy running without a watch. Sometimes I enjoy running on the treadmill.
No, you shouldn't become a slave to technology, but for many people it helps them enjoy their running more.

Are you also going to start a thread about running without music? ;)

I already ranted on people wearing ear buds while racing - that was a while ago.

Unless you're standing around for five minutes after the nominal start of a group run while waiting for every last person to get a satellite connection, without which, there would be no point in running.

Lol true! I usually try to remember to turn mine on early. But if it takes too long I will just start without it. But for most of my group runs I am actually leading so it's forgivable if the leader wants her gps. ;)

I remember hanging out with the Luddites back in the UK. Was a smashing time.
I always wear Mr. Garmin, even though most of the time I don't look at it during the run. Just allows me to pick a route as I go and track stuff afterwards. And I don't expect to be doing any more speed workouts going forwards.

I suppose I should google it, but it wouldn't tell me what you really meant. What is a luddite?

Resistant to advances in technology.

"a "Luddite" is a term describing those opposed to, or slow to adopt or incorporate into their lifestyle, industrialisation, automation, computerisation or new technologies in general" from Wikipedia

I agree with this completely. Why would I tell someone else how to enjoy their sport?

I use my Garmin when I want to, and not when I don't want to.

For some days, where I have a specific workout that I want to do at pace and/ or distance I find it pretty handy. On other days, when I know my route, and I just want to run at a pace I want to run at (without caring how fast or slow it is) I don't wear it.

When I race, I like having it so I can keep an eye on my pace and not get carried away early on.

For everyone else, whatever floats their boat..........
Keep on rolling, just a mile to go. Keep on rolling my old buddy, you're moving much too slow.

You and me, we agree with one another. But there are a lot of people out there who can't wait to tell someone else "You: you're doing it wrong".

I got the untie/unite reference. That has nothing to do with being anti-technology.

No that's the luddite part.

I think the luddites were the people who threw their wooden shoes, or "sabots" into machinery to damage it, thus giving rise to the word "vandalism"
