So you want to be called crazy? (aka 50km beginner)

Postby Size5 » Wed Jun 21, 2006 9:30 pm

Dwayne I'm hoping with all you powers and pull you can put this as a sticky for the ultra thread.

This is one example os a beginner training program. I'm mixed on it in that it doesn't use back to back long runs. Maybe you don't need that for 50kms but I sure liked how it made me mentally strong. I also believe in a bit more cross training than this program has but I'll post it as a "framework". They list Wed as an optional training day of running or x-train. I'll label it as x-train... Distances in MILES

Code: Select all

      M     T     W     Th     F     S     S
WK1   5     5     XT    4      R    12     R

WK3   5     5     XT    4      R    10     R

WK15  5     5     XT    4      R    12     R
WK16  3     3     XT    4      R         RACE

This is a program designed to "finish" and they recommend you be fit enough to run a trail marathon.

so, the longest run in this program is 22 miles?

It's not much different from a marathon program then...?

Actually it looks alot like my first marathon training schedule with the longer mid week runs except the long runs start off higher & stay there.

Its one example of a 50km program. As I mentioned, I think there are some things that are not great about this program.... The first 50km I trained for, I used time instead of distance. So if I had to guess, my longest run was probably somewhere around 22 miles. However, I then ran the next day (and did substantial back to back runs). I was VERY prepared....

This program also doesn't have any hills in it, which I think you might need depending on the course.

The only other thing I'd say is that if you were planning on running blackfoot, I'd spend about 75% of my miles ON TRAILS as opposed to manking much of that road miles....

I loved the way your eyes started to pop out of your head when I told you about it! Seeing the machinery starting to churn was awesome!

The race Cheryl is talking about has a basic site at http://www.roundthemoon.ca/ and $25 to register makes it a bargain!

Krista, I've made this a sticky, and I'll see if I can fix the formatting so it looks like a table.

All you have to do is make the font Courier New (i.e. a fixed with font) for it to look like a table Dwayne.

Wait a minute - Why are we trying to loose our soul in september when there is a perfectly good race in your backyard?

And.... oh to have the geek power of being able to make a pretty table like that :P

Um, well, the rock for one... and 100k vs 50k makes the challenge that much greater... and the 100k is a great way to get to know the course for the 100miler next time :-)

Geeze I was kinda hoping just for a 50km rock....... since that STILL allowed me to check out the course for the 100 miler

I'd of course like a TOP rock but that probably isn't in the cards..... Failing that, I'd like a rock for every distance

Krista!! You're like the little voice in my head! I think to myself, oh good, I can stop thinking about ultras now and then you go and post a perfectly reasonable training schedule!! What's another 7.8k?? I could do that, right??

You're as bad as Krista!! I would be interested in that, but it's only 1 week after OIM. I might be losing my mind, but I'm not crazy yet!! However, let me know if you see any others...just in case I might be interested.
