Doonst runs up Mono Cliffs 5Peaks

Postby Doonst » Sat Aug 12, 2006 1:16 pm

Hills hills hills. Big hills small hills, slight hills and steep switchbacks. Grass hills, gravel hills, sandy hills and rocky hills. Mono Cliffs 5 Peaks trail race was 11.2 K of, mixed hills. The biggest one was 50 M up in 600 M distance, totally runable. That was my only split over 6 minutes, most down from 5:02 to 5:30. These short races can be brutal too, the pace never lets up. I was bagged at 5 K. But that's when I hit my stride, so I turned out to be fine. It was a mostly narrow course too, single or double track. People would ask or at least warn when passing. A relatively young, and competitive crowd. I swear the 10 K marker was at about 9.3 K, tough last stretch before switchback downhill and 600 M slight downhill to the finish. I passed a woman who I had been running behind or ahead all race after the steeps, she yelled out (only half kidding) "you b*stard" as I took off.I ended up at 59:35 or so, results weren't up yet. I think I placed well for me, be interesting to see. They can take days though.
There was another notable thing about this race for me. My tenth race of the year, it was the first one where there were no other Maniacs! You get to take it for granted, as part of the race scene, I missed you guys! I'm sure you all had good excuses.
next up:

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Thanks for the report. I've been looking for the lowdown on some of these 5 peaks. Nice run Sheldon. By the way, I'm leaning towards Haliburton. Maybe I'll see you there....

Good Job, Sheldon!

I know what you mean about no Maniacs! I'll be "duing" one of those tomorrow! I plan on wearing the orange, though, and doing some recruiting!

Congratulations. Sounds like a neat race. Not that I want to run it, but it sounds cool nonetheless.

My excuse is I can't run 11k of hills at all . I have trouble to run 11k flat in 59 minutes.
There you go, just not young and competitive like Sheldon.

I see what you mean! They're missing a hundred racers in the middle??? 30 seconds faster I'd be on there.

Well done, buddy!

Too bad we didn't make it - Jane and I went up there the previous Saturday, to have a trial run on the course... as you mentioned, it's a great, rolling, scenic course with lots of variety. Unfortunately, Jane took a very nasty spill on the run, and is still recovering from numerous scrapes, cuts, bumps, bruises and twists.  Spooked us both a bit, so we decided to pass on the race, since we didn't want to risk our goal races for later in the fall.

Wow, I sure hope she's ok. I know what you mean about risk/ goal races; I'm pretty sure that I am going to bail on the ITT next weekend so as to be fresh and healthy for the start of the Fall Tour.

Way to go Sheldon- speedy as always! I was thinking of that one, but with the ankle and RFTT training run... it was a pass in the end.

Denis, hope Jane is OK. I fell on the trails last week too and am a bit shaken up and bruised, but sounds like her fall was really nasty- sending good vibes her way :(
