Robbie-T Brings it at Forest City
over 5586km - 45 lost pounds - 8 Marathons - 3 years hard training - 1 BQ - Priceless!
My plan last fall wasn't to attempt to BQ today, at that time I wanted to run Forest City to a solid sub 3:30 to prove to myself that I had what it takes to maybe make it to Boston someday. I'm not sure exactly what happened but over the winter I worked on my form and beat up the hills. What came out the other side proved itself at ATB, and then I had a new plan for Forest City, a BQ attempt on a tough course, a course that had been claimed to not be good for PB's or BQ's. I wanted both and a 20min PB over last fall.
Sunday started early at 5:30, had breakfast, took it easy, and eventually made our way to the start for 8am, chatted with a bunch of maniacs, moved up to get ready and we were off. The weather was ideal, perfect for running.
My plan was to stick to about 4:35 pace, and then pick it up later in the race, after 30k. The first half I felt good, tried to stay relaxed and just flow. There were many small hills, none huge but lots, they take there toll eventually. At the half I was right on track 1:37:36.
The second half there was a lot fewer runners, I was actually happy to run alone for a while and thought the second half would be technically easier (wrong), I just stuck to pace, and worked on catching the next runner in front of me for mental motivation. I picked off people slowly, we turned back, some wind was in our faces at times, but not for long and mostly protected on the trail. I was still feeling good, I decided to stay on pace, and wait for about 36k to start pushing. The last 6k are pretty tough in this race, back on the road, and more hills against the wind made it tough to finish real hard. I knew I was right on plan, I was NOT going to lose time now and finish just over BQing time, NOT me. Finally I was on the last km and flat and pushed hard to the finish.
3:14:49
22nd place overall
2nd place 35-39 age group
1:37:36 first half (36th place at half)
1:37:13 second half for a negative split (no one ahead of me had a negative split, not even NDERITU) I'm very proud of this.
If you don't think you can take +55mins off your first Marathon time to BQ, forget it, you can!!
Yep Jo-Jo I'll be able to help you plan your wardrobe in Boston 2008!!!
Great seeing everyone again, and I appreciate everyones support, especially Mommy-T for helping me get here. Happy Mothers Day!!
I'm very surprised with how good my legs felt afterwards and now, I'm sure I'll be stiff for a couple days, but I didn't leave it all out there.
Forest City Marathon is a great event, I'll be back, there is lots for spectators to do, free stuff everywhere. They really do organize a great race.

Outstanding Robbie! All that hard work (and a little thinking) paid off with the big prize. Great day. As always you are an inspiration.
next up:
This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day
So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

One fine day

One fine day
So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Like others, I am not surprised but so unbelievably thrilled for you. You are the poster child of strong will and determination. Plus I think there is an element of a birth given gift that you have finally uncovered.
Congratulations Rob!!

Wow, you are really a poster boy for the "hard work gets results" school of training. I am so impressed and so proud of you! Way to go. I really have to BQ now!!

WOW.
An amazing race for someone on an incredible journey.
I was really interested in hearing how you spent time this winter working on form. Part of my gameplan this year.
You're a fast runner through hard work and probably some natural talent. But you are also such a great encourager to others on their own journeys...that's what makes this BQ extra special for me.
Give Mommy-T a hug from me...with a young family I believe you could not have got the necessary training in without her support. So cheers to her
It's gonna be very cool having you in Boston in 2008...I can now sleep at night knowing my wardrobe consultant will be there
