Doonst gets blown away at the Hannukah Hustle 10K

Postby Doonst » Sun Nov 25, 2007 5:30 pm

10 K race today in Westdale Hamilton. I had high hopes to break 45 minutes but it was not to be. High winds trump high hopes it seems. My final time was 46:10 gun, 46:05 chip. It was a nice enough day, sunny and around zero, but the winds curling in off Hamilton Harbour and Cootes Paradise seemed to be omnipresent. It seemed tough for everybody, only 7 guys under 40 minutes. Of course I didn't know that out on the course, it was a little disheartening to see every K split time get worse. More wind on the return part of the out and back. Its a nice race but in late November you are taking your chances with the weather. There was ice on and under the bridges. Still only one guy passed me to stay after people got sorted out in the first 2 K. With half a K to go, one woman passed me, I tucked in behind her up the last (and only) hill, thought that we were catching the woman in front of us. We didn't, but I elbowed my way back passed other woman (saying excuse me of course), when a guy at the finish jumped out gesturing and saying "third"; I had got in the middle of a 4 second battle between 2nd and 3rd place women. That's after running alone from 3.5 to 9.5 K.
Anyways its too bad about my time, but that's sports. I didn't feel too bad but certainly not spunky either. I have been faster to 10 K in my last 3 half marathons, and in training tempo runs too. I did get 2nd place medal in my age group, and it is a 2 minute PB. So much for great expectations and McMillan calculations. That perfect 10 K eludes me still.

Well that's not too shabby then, is it? Keep on gunning for the 10k Doonst! You'll beat it. :D

Yep...what he said :D

And it was windy today...when I went out for my run at noon I ran into a head wind...then the wind changed directions and I ran home into the wind!

Congratulations  . It isn't bad time.
Weather today wasn't cooperating for sure. I was running my long run close to Cootes Paradise on ATB hills - it was windy.
McMillan calculator works well for me, but I was lucky with good weather during my races :)

When whether conditions conspire against the whole field equally, I think placement becomes more important than time. Second place is second place. Nice racin'!

Well Done Doonst! One thing about the weather, is that it challenges everyone equally.

Good job Sheldon! A pb is a pb any way you slice it.

Yeah, I know how you feel about having expectations and not meeting them, but wind really does make a huge difference. Also I'm sure your body is still recovering after your kick-ass marathon- you found Hamilton pretty tough too, right? A pb is great in any case, and so is hardware. I know you can break 45, but it's tough when you've been doing distance specific training to bust out those shorter predicted times. I still think you're an awesome "runner"! ;) :D

Today did not have the conditions for a perfect 10K. But it sounds like you gave it your all for the day; what more can you ask. Good work, Sheldon.

Congrats on your placing! That darned Hamilton wind gets us every time.

We're going to try this new thing called jogging. Or maybe it's yogging-with a silent "j". Apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.

There's a great piece of advice! If you want that perfect, fast 10k, Sporting Life is as good as it gets. I hear it's all downhill. No nasty Hamilton harbour winds to hold you back. No ice under the bridges. :P

Great job in some really tough conditions. Tough to keep in it both mentally and physically when you are battling winds like that. You still got a PB. YOu are getting faster and faster every race. Congrats.
