The weakest link at PEC

Postby Mich » Tue Oct 07, 2008 9:50 am

I initially put my report along with Doug's as part of the team but I will put this leg 3 on it's own.

First off I am glad I decided to call Lorne at work and tell him I would like to do the relay at PEC and that I had booked a room just in case. From there we just needed a team and Orange Crush was formed. Lorne, Nick, Lesley and Doug thanks for making this a great weekend I had tons of fun. Lesley, it was nice seeing you again and Nick and Doug it was great to finally meet you.

As always I was stressed about this race, I’m hoping this will improve with the more I do. This time it was more about the logistics of the run, making sure I didn’t miss Nick (he was passing me the chip) and making sure I did my best for the team and not just me. This is where a special thanks goes out to Nancy (a-slow-5), Jill (JSmitty) and Jacqui (Jacsprat) for keeping me company and helping to de-stress me at the half start (my start of Leg 3 was just before the half way mark). You guys are the best. I also got to meet Frambosine here too, which was great because I didn’t get to speak with her at the M&G.

I saw Nick approach the transition point waving his arms wondering where the hell I was cuz there was a lot of halfers waiting around. I ran out and met him, took the chip and off I went. I can honestly say I was raring to go. Grabbed a sip of water 1K in to get rid of the dry mouth and figured I would just run until I felt the need to take a quick walk break. The 2K marker went by, all was good, then the 3K marker, half way there, WOW 4K this is just flying by. Saw the 3:45 bunny pass me and new I would be seeing Lorne soon, sure enough there he was, he asked how I was doing…. GREAT… and he said the same. Told him Robbie-T was right on track at the half and off he went. I could see him in the distance. Contemplated a walk break but a relay person passed me and I decided against it. Will walk at the water station and then take on the advice of Nick I will run like hell and feel like hell until I see Lesley, ok here I go…….. and boom there was Leslie earlier than I expected, I’m not sure she was expecting to see me either, she still had her l/s t-shirt & jacket on. I anticipated being excited to see her (glad that my 6K was done) but in some ways I was disappointed, not in a bad way, I wanted to keep running. I was expecting to meet her much closer to the 27K marker under a canopy of trees but the transition point was earlier and after speaking to other leg 3 relay people we all agreed that we met up with our exchange person in less than 6K. Passed the chip to Lesley, took her clothes and off she went.

I stayed at that point and cheered on the half marathoners. Way to go, JSmitty, Jacsprat, Frambosine and a-slow-5.

I hopped on a bus and headed to the finish line. Had great fun on there too, met some really nice people and got to see a multitude of RMer’s. I called out to as many of them as I could, so if you heard anyone call your name or wave to you from a bus that was probably me. I was glad I could see Lorne one more time out there on the course with La running just in front of him. Shortly after that there was Doug and I was able to tell him that La would be there in minutes.

Found Nick and a bunch of RMers close to the finish line and then got run to the finish line along with Nick and Doug as he brought it home. Great Job Orange Crush. What an amazing experience. I had tonnes of fun.

The icing on the cake was being able to see Lorne complete his marathon. I wasn’t in Manitoba for the first one but was happy to be there for this one.

What is this 'weakest link' stuff?

By the sounds or it - you rocked your race!

What's next?

If you're the weakest link that's one heck of a strong chain!!

You did a fantastic job and it was so nice to meet you and Lorne.

Great to finally meet you, Michelle. A real pleasure, couldn't ask for a better team-mate. Way to go in pushing through your section and hammering that last piece. 10th out of 41 shows we had no weak link. No need to be so nervous next time! Mind you, you'll probably be doing the half next time.....

First of all...I demand that you change this thread title! It sounds like you were the spark that got this whole relay started in the first place!

Congrats on a great run - you were strong and speedy (and provided lots of support to maniacs along the way!) Great stuff!

Change the title to "the Weakest link" NOT or something.

Michelle,
You are full of such enthusiam and your running will continue to flourish.
I know that you will rock that 10K in November. You have the bug now!
You (and the others) made that wait bearable and you looked absolutely great on your take-off for your leg.
Keep up the good work, you look great.
Nice to see both you and Lorne again
Cheers,
Jill

Exactly my thought!!

Mich, thanks for organizing the team! It was great to see you again and also how far you've come with running! I think when we first met you hadn't even started yet.

Yes, I was totally surprised to see you so soon! And I did run up the road to meet you (the corner where we were supposed to stand was "blind" in that you couldn't see your runner coming until they were almost there). I was also thinking it would be nice to encourage you in the final 200m or so, but you clearly didn't need any encouragement or support from me! You were looking and running great, all on your own!!

Congrats, team-mate!

I've said it already many times and I don't mind to say it again, you rock! I am so pleased for you not only for your race efforts this weekend, but also for your accomplishments you've made with your running! You are one determined lady. I was so happy to finally meet you and Lorne in person and to spend time with you at the start line of your relay leg!

When you're ready to do that half you just let me know! I'll be rooting for you!

I think I commented on your report in Doug's but then couldn't find his to check.

Nevertheless, there is no weakness to speak of; you delivered a solid performance and did your team (and all of us) proud. Bravo!

I hope we get to talk next time-sorry we didn't. :(

We're going to try this new thing called jogging. Or maybe it's yogging-with a silent "j". Apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.
