Robbie-T @ Sunnybrook 8k Masters XC w/pics
Similar to cgraham this was my first XC race since high school, I knew the competition was going to be upper level and the course was going to be hard too. James, my lunch time running bud is a long time Masters runner and gave me all the info on the course and the field.
I've had a cold all week and is still very bothersome but I wasn't missing this race for anything.
Well I think the best of the best came out for this race 30 of 114 came in below 30 minutes for 8k of tough terrain.
I did about 3k warm up and a few strides, gathered at the start in my singlet and fancy new spikes and we are off. Feeling good 3:34 or so first km, then the hill steep down and back up. The hill isn't huge, it is steep, the thing is you are trying to run 8k pace as much as possible so it really smacks you in the gut trying to get up it as fast as possible.
Try to recover quick and about 2 more km to finish the first loop, km 3 was kind of flat (cgraham caught me here) and the 4th was a long up hill. At this point I'm running at about 90% effort level and now to do it all over again. The last 2k were very hard. Finished as hard as I could, I was bagged. No one caught me the final loop, and I caught a couple guys so as slow as I though I was going I must have been doing OK.
I loved it!! It was a gut check for about 7 of the 8km of the race, trying to hold off other racers, hold your pace, possibly track down a few in front of you, and not fall flat on your face.
4k cool down with some of James' friends and stayed to watch the awards. The winner was 52 years old in 27:17!! Jerry Kooymans an amazing runner.
13-19 in 35-39
44-91 Males
44-114 Overall
Fizz the 5k race in 2 weeks doesn't climb the hill and I hear is "mostly" flat, so that's a bit less to worry about

Wow, you guys were in with the real big dogs!! Congrats on a great race and being willing to take these guys on. Somehow, knowing you, I think next time will be a little different....

Good to see you again Robbie - thanks for saying Hi as I passed by. I'd looked for you at the start, but seeing as I showed up less than ten minutes before the gun went off, that didn't work so well.
Glad you had fun out there in spite of having been sick - you looked pretty happy around 3k in.

Great result, RT!
Jerry was the president of our company's running club. I think the club is now-defunct, though. Yeah, those old guys really are fast! The winner of the Angus Glen 10K yesterday was in the 50-54 AG.

WOW. That sounds absolutely nutty- when YOU aren't in the top half of your category, you know the competition is fierce! Great job. It sounds like a lot of fun. And a 52 year old running 8km in 27 and change? Wow.

Sounds like a really tough race with some stiff competition, but you held your own. Great job!
