Postby Robbie-T » Sun Dec 14, 2008 8:46 pm

My 5th year at the ENJ, a race I totally look forward to ever year. After a busy XC season, I was wondering if I had lost my edge for this race.

Saturday I had a great pre-race meal of chips, cake, ice-cream, more chips and some other yummies at my oldest boys 4th birthday party.

It snowed over night and rained in the morning so I switched back to my trail shoes again for the race, I was hoping to run in my lighter shoes but opted for the extra grip.

I got to the race an hour early, went out for a warm up, came back to the car stripped down to my shorts, did a few strides and got in line up front. My goal was to get down to 41:xx, not sure I felt that good today.

Photographer trying to get a fancy race start photo got trampled, literally, I jumped over him, man that guy was dumb!!

Anyway I'm feeling pretty good for the first km (3:34), Magoo catches me and says Hi, and we start chatting at 3:30 pace, that sounds a bit crazy now. I let Magoo go and go by the Mile mark at 5:35, cool!!

2nd km done, (3:30) I actually felt pretty comfortable and reserved at this pace I was surprised, time to start climbing and catching up with guys who went out too quick.

3-4:12
4-4:08
5-4:04

Caught up to Magoo and passed him just before The Hill. Time for the big hill climb, steady climb then recover quick at the top and get the pace back down again
6- 4:42

Couple more km of hills then back up on the pavement. I think I started to slack off a bit too much.
7-4:22
8-4:06

Back on the pavement and now it is time to hammer it for home.

9-3:48
10-3:47

No one is really that close to me, I tried catching a couple guys but no chance really, I was racing myself. Half Mile to go, through the S bend, see Dave and Doonst at the turn and book it for the finish. Did you notice the nice finish area this year? It just got asphalted within the last 2 weeks, much nicer.

10.8-2:31 (3:16 pace)

Finish- 42:41 a PB by 3 seconds!!

5th year running this glorious race and 5th PB.
17th overall
7/51 in my age group, incredible almost everyone in front of me was <20 or 30-39

I'm happy with this result, my last missed PB was 2006 and I didn't want to start with the ENJ.

Nice to see many friends and family out for the race, great organization and food as always. Nice to eat chocolate and anything else I see that isn't good for me ;-)

Great racing today Rob. It was great to meet you and your family. You have a great course right in your neighbourhood. Today was not my day, so consider this one your Christmas present...There is a race in March in my neighbourhood. I'll be in better form then.

Cheers,
Kyle

Nice race, way to squeak out another PB! It was nice you had a new maniac to race with. Now you can chase him to ATB gold!

I hope the cake was home-made. The stuff you buy at Loblaws et. al is not something I'd want to eat...

As for the race, nice job - sounds like a tough course and not the nicest conditions.

And maybe after that encounter with the photographer, you should consider trying hurdles for the summer...
