Chasing Doonst at Sulphur Springs

Postby casual-runner » Sat May 23, 2009 4:30 pm

I wasn't expecting fantastic performance during this race. I am starting my base building for Muskoka in September, and this past Monday I did my first 100K long bike ride. So I was planning long time ago that it will be just a good training run.

I knew also that Sheldon will be racing and I wanted to do better against him than last year. Last year we were running together for about 20K and than he took off, gaining more than 3 minutes in the last 5K. I was suffering in the last 5K, it was my first trial race.

This time was slightly different we didn't run together, instead I was 15-50 meters behind Sheldon for the most of the 15K, and than I lost him from my view. I was straggling a little for a few km, but around 20K I calculated that I can have a PB if I push myself hard. So I did. I had strong 5K. I was hoping to see Sheldon near the end, but he is in good shape this year and crossed the finish line much earlier. On a slightly changed course I improved my last year result of 2:16:52 (24.55K according to GPS) to 2:16:28 (24.7K on my GPS).

The theme of this year was UltraQueenga running her 100 miles with Viking. I saw Kinga on the course, it was near the 20K she has been running 3.5 hours and she was smiling, fresh and light on her legs.

I saw many maniacs some running, some cheering, some running and cheering and helping Kinga, like Tracy (MINI-T) who after finishing her 10K, will be running one 20K loop with Kinga in the middle of the night - Good Luck to both of you.

For a training run a PB is a pretty good result.

Well done!

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

Nice one Wes. I think the theme for you this year is"seconds faster." (he did a 5 second PB at Mississauga half recently.) The big difference this time was your strong finish- you cut the time between us in half. That is a good sign. So, until we meet again!

This blackbird's mute gonna sing again

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Way to be casual-runner, maybe you will get Sheldon next year! Hope the “High Five" didn’t slow you down too much.
