AirForceRunner finds closure at the Army Half.

Postby AirForceRunner » Sun Sep 20, 2009 3:32 pm

I could say a lot about this race, but I won`t. Just a play by play will suffice.
Started back around the 2:20 pace bunny, as I couldn`t find my training partner until about 8:50. Gun goes and the shuffle begins. The first 3 km go by at 5:00 pace, and then I decide to `shake`my training partner (we had a vendetta in this race). That would be the last I saw of him.
Kms 3-6 go by in 4:25-4:35 range, with the plan to drop into the low 4:20`s, but then I started feeling heat in my feet. This was quite unexpected, so I was a bit worried.
Next 3 km go by in roughly 4:40 a piece, as my feet are getting worse. This is pissing me off, because its usually my knee that hurts. I`ve somewhat learned to deal with that...this foot thing was something else.
Had no problems with the Heron Hump fitness wise, but after that, the long bending downhill wrote off my feet for good. I would run until I couldn`t stand it, and then turn and walk backwards, hoping to find my training partner. Sadly, he was too far back.
Eventually stumbled home in 1:47:40 chip time. Upon returning to the hotel room, I removed my shoes, and my feet are riddled with blood blisters...yeah, nice and deep. What the hell. I even have a blister on my hip  . Not to mention the slight scream I let out in the shower as I forgot the duck-tape for my nipples. Yeah, they`re pretty much sanded off.
10 km - 47:17
Next 11.1 km - 1:00:23
I shouldn`t complain....it is a PB by 1:30. But my previous forrays into the half distance have been ugly. On the plus side, I had a super time at the M&G, talking about running, RM history...and pole dancing.

So thats it sports fans...AirForceRunner is retiring his wings for now, as well as his username. :( Time to change it to something more appropriate (and wonderfully dramatic). 8)

For all your experience running through a painful injury, you apparently never got a chance to practice running with uncomfortable "flesh wounds". This PB is a great way to go out, especially since it isn't too far out of reach for the triumphant comeback.

Great PB and thanks for the injury visual! Yum! I hope these 18 months go by quickly. You have the fitness and the speed though to come back fast! It was nice to meet you at a M&G though and not see your goofy smile go by at breakneck speed! :D :P

Good luck with your next year, I'll likely be rooting for your recuperation as much as I do for others' race results. Get this problem sorted out and then come back and take your shots. You're a really fit man and it'll all come back quickly.

Way to end this phase of your rubning career. Rest up and heal and then come back even stronger!

Sounds familiar (although much faster). Hope you bounce back from the running break feeling great and looking to set even more PBs.

I have mixed emotions. I last remember that you stopped running due to your knee injury, excited to see you were running again and sad to see that you will be letting it go (for a while). Great job in running this half and hope that you will be able to come back for more in the future.

Wow, I'd never have guessed re. the agony of the (blistered) feet - you were all smiles when we shouted you down near the end! Best of luck with the surgery and recovery...I'm glad you've had closure, but here's hoping you'll be re-opening the delightful can of worms that is running again real soon.

Well done buddy! Not your whisper goal but still a bang to end this leg of the run. Sorry to hear about the flesh wounds but they will heal quickly. Your knee will take a bit longer but play it smart and you will be changing your name to "Once Again A Runner". It was really nice to finally meet you today. Pole dancing.... so this is your prescribed exercise for the next 18 months?!!? Ha! :D

The shirt I raced in has a small side pocket with a zipper near the bottom. I'm not normally a 'tucker', but I had tucked my shirt into my shorts, and the zipper rubbed up and down (I'm guessing).

Wait a sec, how come you lined up with the 2:20 bunny if you were running sub-5/km?? :?

Alright, so no running for a little while... have you made your way over to the Dark Side yet?
