Had no real intention of doing a race report for this, but Jo-Jo talked (bullied) me into it.
I knew this race was on the horizon, but to be VERY frank, my training of late has been non-existent. My last run (if you can call it that) was up Grouse Mountain on Oct 25th. Yeah, over a month. Before that, 3 runs since the Army Run. Throw in a nasty flu 2 weeks ago, and the stage was set for a PW. Almost got it too.
Arrived 1 hr before race time, signed up, and had a quick chat with FlexRun. Searched high and low for DougG, but found out later he didn't make it due to a hamstring issue.
The race starts, and everyone (except me) tears off like a banshee. Its amazing how much patience at the start you can have when you know you won't have a strong race. I eventually caught all of the overly impetuous by the first km, which I hit in 4:20. Next was a 4:17. Things are going well until the hills start. Granted they were small, but they brought back knee pain that I hadn't felt in a month. The doubt that put into my mind, combined with a big gap on the next racer behind me led to the inevitable....a bad case of the 'walksies'. I may not have walked, but I made the mistake of looking behind me (NEVER DO THAT) and justified that I could maintain position. This resulted in a 4:48 3rd km, and 9:12 last 2 km (forgot to hit the lap on my watch).
Flex was marshalling right around the 4 km mark, and I joked as I went by asking him if I could borrow his leg in place of my knee. In hindsight, that may have been in bad taste, and if it was....Flex, sorry man. I'm really good a bad humour. Chatted awhile with Flex afterwards, and he never mentioned it, but he probably wouldn't. Class act!
Finished in a pedestrian (for me) 22:38, 12 seconds off a PW (which was run in 1.5 ft of snow, through a blizzard). To quote HorseLady...."You get the race you don't train for".
I'm not upset with the race. I officially decided to run it this morning, and knew it would be slow. It was kinda cool to run without the usual self-imposed pressure. 2010 will have an entirely new racing focus for me (Trails/Petawawa Ironman), so I plan to enjoy the remaining 3 races in this series.

Thanks for the report. BTW...I don't bully...I boss. There's a big difference
I like this race report...it isn't filled with angst. This is good. And I'm sure you were happy to just be out there on a race course.
From the little I know of Flex I suspect he would get a chuckle out of your comment. And no...don't think about amputating your bum knee leg just so you can get a flex leg Yes I have a strange sense of humour too
I can just picture you on the race course...you're such a goof...and I say that in the fondest way

You bet I am ....I can be ridiculously competitive sometimes, so the goofiness helps offset the competitiveness a little. Its worth the few seconds I tend to lose to it each race.
Unfortunately, my goofiness didn't prevent my competitveness from directly challenging Robbie-T to a 6 hr footrace at Dirty Girls.

Nice report. They are a fast bunch aren't they? You will get your wish soon - snow is coming! The final race last year was in minus 18 degrees with lots of snow; won't that be fun!

Re: AirForceRunner-Orillia Snowflake 5 km
It was good to see you at the race AirForceRunner. The only thing I heard when you went by me at the 4 k mark was something about your knee hurting you, never heard anything about borrowing my leg, but Jo-Jo is right, no offence taking. I probably would have taken it off and passed it to you , I have lots more at home and I won't get into my leg stories right now, we will save that for another time .
Great race and time considering you haven't run that much in the last while. Glad you liked the race course in my home town. Hope to see you and Doug next race.

Re: AirForceRunner-Orillia Snowflake 5 km
Hey you went out there and raced and that is good! Sometimes the training is not there but we feel compelled to race.
So good job with that. Don't worry about the time, you did not train for a time and with all your knee issues and little running prior in my books your time is darn good.
Hey I also feel so special you used a quote of mine...wow.... I think that quote is a keeper!
Hope to "run" into you at some other races in the future!
