Robbie-T @ The Iroquoia Trail Test

Postby Robbie-T » Sat Aug 16, 2008 5:57 pm

My goals were finish top 10, and finish below 2:45
Both goals depended a lot on things out of my control, who showed up for this event and what the trails were like. If the trail is tough like it was due to all the rain this summer, it seemed like every step you slid a bit, it could easily add 10 minutes onto your time. Doonst heard that would be reasonable today based on other veterans comments.

I finish 6th overall with a time of 2:49, I'm pretty happy with my results, 4 minutes better then last year, on a muddier and wetter course this year.
They gave me a 2nd place open men under 40 age group award since the top 3 guys were all in the same group as me.

I'd like to say it was from a good strategy and smart racing but it wasn't.
I went out hard with the leaders and tried to stay with them and did fairly well, I thought I could actually pull it off for a while. There is no coasting on this course so if you get in trouble it punishes you for the rest of the course. For the last 10k I paid for it, dehydrated, plugged ears, cramping calf and hamstrings. With all that only one guy passed me in that stretch of pain. I fought with myself to keep going I always thought it was a matter of time before the pack caught up to my lead.

All in all a great day on the trail, great friends and good times. The course is one of my favourites it pushes you mentally and physically to the limit then kicks you one more time when you are down. The course beat me today, but I kind of let it, to see just how hard it can be, and how tough I can be. I'll try a slightly more strategic race plan next year.

Fun wow! Robbie that placement is excellent. Look at the times compared to last year, almost nobody was faster. Last year's winner, 6 minutes slower, good for second place. I think that could really be your marathon time this fall.

I'm glad you finally had a hard run, I know last year it seemed too easy. When I heard you at the finish, mumbling about "I should have rented a mule", and "I beat Ryne's stupid mule" I knew you were rode hard and put away wet.

Having fun yet?

This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Wow, the hits just keep on comin'...

Great job Rob. It sounds like a really tough race and you fought hard to do so well.

Aha, so it's ITT for Iroquoia Trail Test. Gotcha!

I'm trying to do the math, and can't seem to manage it. You ran 32K in 2:49 on trails... what pace would that be?

Never mind!! CONGRATULATIONS ON AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE on a crazy hard course.

Yup, road racing is tame stuff compared to this! :D

Nice job, bud.

I'm not surprised you persevered through the pain. I always think of your mental toughness when I race.

Now get ready to go to PEC and kick the sh!@ out of a sub 3!

Great result - I love to watch you run - you make it look so easy. To be able to run with the big boys out there - outstanding. I was surprised to see you without water, interesting experiment. My money is on you at PEC. Great as always.

When you told me last week you wanted to finish top ten I thought you'd finish 7th.
Very glad you made a "liar" out of me :D

Take a look at those Zoom pictures of me around the rocks, I think I was pretty seriously dehydrated, it was close to a disastrous experiment in hind site.

I've been thinking about goals for this race, it's pretty ridiculous to even have a goal to aim for. You run for most of 32k unable to look at your pace because you don't want to trip over something and even if you could it goes up and down so much it gives you no idea of where you really are standing compared to your goal. You kind of just pop out of the woods at the finish look down at your watch and you say "cool close enough". Actually you are just happy to be finished ;-)

Come on, only 7th!! So what is your prediction for PEC?
