Where's your running log?

Postby Kristen » Thu Nov 19, 2009 1:57 pm

Where do you keep your running log? Online, in a little notebook, on your computer, in your head? And what sort of stuff helps you when you go back and review? :D

I added some runs to itsmyrun, but find the upload cumbersome so haven't done it yet to upload all my data.

I've uploaded my runs from Sports Tracks to Run Saturday, Buckeye Outdoors and Garmin Connect just to see which one works best. I haven't found one that is the best yet, i guess I'm just picky.

I have everything in Sports Tracks so that's really my BEST log so far. I even put my daily morning weight in there, as well as if I'm sick, what sickness I have. I just thought about this when reading the first post, that I'll also put my race reports in there. that way, EVERYTHING is in it's place....

Once I get a chance to play, I'll put it into itsmyrun.com I think overall, it's the easiest (other than uploading from Garmin)

I used beginnertriathlete.com

this year, I took a break from tracking my training though. It was a refreshing break.

The only thing that sucks about taking the break is that I haven't tracked my shoes, and, I'm always wondering if it's time for new ones!

Mine's in a Google spreadsheet. Started an Excel spreadsheet in fall 2004. It has a tab for each year of training, and one for all my race results. Rest days are shaded grey. It adds up each week's mileage, and summarizes the months and years. I include the plan, the actual, distance in km and miles, pace in km and miles, a link to the route, and any comments I have. I highlight races, and have a little countdown to them. :) I also include other activities, such as ultimate, and biking (though there's NONE of that in 2009 :( ). For a while, I colour-code cells based on the pace, so I could scan through and see quickly what was under 5:00, between 5:00 and 5:30, and above. Haven't done that this year, though.

Hm. Now that I've written this all out... maybe I am a little obsessive....

Since 1998, I've recorded runs on looseleaf: 15 sheets and counting. Each run gets a line (15 sheets times 2 sides times about 33 lines per side equals about 1000 runs and too much of a PITA to switch to electronic format) indicating the date, the distance (along with various codes for common routes), time, time of day, weather, and a brief comment. I also have a summary sheet for monthly and yearly mileage totals.

Kristen you make a great PR person!!

Of course I use ItsMyRun as much as I like being able to track what I've done from anywhere, and being able to easily look up how I tapered for my last race, and what paces I was hitting then and now, weekly/monthly/yearly summaries, the things that I really like is seeing what others are doing. Seeing what they are training for and how they are feeling, almost like a micro blog. I like seeing how other are improving.

I think ideally I'd like to see the value of ItsMyRun not only be about "easily" tracking your training, but to develop into a friendly interactive training community, the twitter version of training logs.

I track with SportTracks. I like that it is multisport, I like that I can manually enter workouts and I like that I can correct for the Garmin track after runs where I got too impatient to wait for a signal.

I have used ItsMyRun in the past and I like the idea, but to use it consistently I would need to be able to load from SportTracks (didn't work when I tried) or I would need to upload the Garmin data and go through the correction process and re-entering the workouts that aren't tracked on my Garmin (not going to happen).

I agree, it's an awesome resource and thinking about this in more detail, it's probably the one I like the best. Just the time to get it uploaded (and I've not even tried yet) will have to be something for me to overcome. SportsTracks is easy because I press a couple buttons and it's done. I'll try to upload everything this weekend maybe and see how it works.

OOPS, forgot what the major conundrum was with this. I need to install Garmin's Training Center, but I absolutley HATE that program because there are no maps that make any sense in it, so I don't even have it installed on my computer...

But, if you quickly sync to Training Center, export that and upload the run to itsmyrun, you get a google based map on your log. It gets very quick, and very slick. Laps too, autogenerated.

I know, call me lazy, but if all that stuff is already in SportsTracks, I have to then do it again into put it into Training Center, then export to a file, then upload... I'll probably do it eventually, just hate to install TrainingCenter.. of all the work Garmin has done with such awesome technology, they really need to work on the software..

I use ItsMyRun. I don't upload Garmin info...that's dh's Christmas holiday project ...teaching me more stuff about my Garmin :D :D Read my sig line

I tend to add notes to all my runs so that Robbie-T can see more detail about the workout and how I'm feeling...he's been a mentor all year but is now "officially"coaching me. Trust me...if he's being really mean you'll see that in the notes

I enjoy checking out how other people are doing. I think this is one of the neat features.

BTW...Doonst...thanks for that hug the other day...much appreciated.

bruyere's post reminded me that I actually have an Excel spreadsheet I use, too. My current one has a tab for 2009, 2008 and 2007. That's where I put my planned workouts (and I can put life events in there that affect my training plan), then once the workout is done it gets updated and shaded.

I use itsmyrun to enter runs that I've done and to upload Garmin data. It can also store more data than I would put in my spreadsheet (lap splits, paces). And I like that I can access it from home and work (my spreadsheet is only at work, with a backup copy at home).

itsmyrun.com - i love using it to track my runs. It's easy to use and I love how it calculates my pace for me. I used to track my runs in a log book but I love this method way better. Like you said KristenL -It's also great to see other runner's logs and the different types of training methods others use.

right now - a calendar we got from our realtor.

when I was getting coached, we used google calendar - but I still kept track of my training in the realtor calendar. Last year, we had fancier software from the sport lab that she worked out of (she moved to Van Island, so Google Calendar worked just fine).

in the past, I would just print out the training schedule and use that. pretty low tech. but I still have those schedules to look back on - worked for the 3 marathons I trained for (NYC marathon was just a 'train by what the hell' plan.)
