Banff-Jasper Relay (Banff, Alberta)
Author: klewlis
Date: 2006-06-05
Organization:
It must be tough to coordinate 2 dozen teams of 17 people each, plus volunteers, support vehicles, etc. Even with all of that, things appeared to go without a hitch (if there were glitches in the organization, we didn't notice them!).
It's unfortunate that we had to have forced starts and such, as it was sometimes confusing and didn't feel like a true relay. However, that is not the fault of the organizers, as it has to be done that way due to the Park needs.
The manuals and information given to us prior to the race were extremely helpful and explained everything well.
Course:
A better course couldn't be picked. The scenery was gorgeous, and the legs are pretty evenly spaced out.
Aid:
There weren't any aid stations due to environmental concerns (read: bears like sweet things). However, we were informed of that in advance so we were prepared with our own sustenance (and of course the support vehicles were able to carry extras if necessary).
Food:
The after-race dinner was really good! They gave us huge pieces of lasagna, salad, buns, and water. Beer and desserts were available for a price.
Stuff:
The shirts are technical and really nice, and I like the cut. We got shirts for volunteering AND for running, and both are tech shirts! The only problem we had was the sizing--there was a large gap between small and medium, making it tough to size properly. They also ran out of smalls.
Overall, this was a great race. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to do it again. I highly recommend it.
