Last year was the 25th Anniversary and its seems each year more and more people want to do this race so goes on everyone's "must do" list. I ran the 10K last year for the first time and I did not appreciate why it was so special. For one thing, you see people with Melissa's t-shirts with 1990, etc. ...

Up at 5:15 am and then off to K-country this morning to play 18 holes of golf - walking and carrying. Came home and felt good so decided I would do a nice little 7 K run - felt very good, first time in weeks and 8 K and 32:32 later - a 4:04 per K pace and I was back home. Funny thing is that I felt ...

Goals for 2005 and 2006
As part of the Mental Aspect of running, one tool is to set short and long term goals. Here are my goals: 2005 Run a half marathon in less than 1:30 - check, Calgary Police 1:29:35 Qualify for Boston - check, Calgary marathon 3:16:59 Get into the top 50 at the Melissa's 22K race in September - 2006 ...

For those Boston Bound: Saturday: Pace Training. Saturday runs vary from 8 to 4 miles with about half of them done at marathon pace. I say this despite the fact that it may be very difficult to achieve your normal marathon pace in bad weather while wearing heavy clothes and with snow and ice on the ...

In training: 5K or less - nothing. 5 - 15 to 20K depending on how hot it is, a single water bottle on a belt. 20K plus - water in a Camel - 3L + at least one gel. I would be so tired and sore after the 20+ runs before getting that Christmas present, now they easier. Try to recreate what I do in a ra...

That was nothing compared to the down in the mud, eye gouging fight Wolf and I had over the same topic. It is nice to see people passionate about the sport and how best to prepare. We are all an experiment of one and I always found it best to pick and choose from the personal experiences of everyone...

Thanks for all the suggestions. Both Dr. J and Jacob have good points. I think that I am in a running rut right now with all my runs being at the same slow pace. I will work on doing my LSD runs slow (as by definition) and trying to increase the pace of my mid-week runs :D A neat tool is the Farlek...

I agree to some extent with all of you. Whilst I am running my first marathon this coming Sunday and have not yet completed the full 42.2 km, I have been running a long time and find it good to push my body and practice running while i am tired. The farthest I ran in my training was just over 35km ...

There are no "junk" miles as running is one sport where to get better one needs to run and there are NO substitutes. But when the term junk miles are used it is to describe those miles that one runs without a specific purpose - a specific purpose would be an interval run, a tempo run, a Long Slow Ru...

Re: More Hill training Q's...
I was thinking of starting a hill routine once a week. I read the earlier post on hill's and have mapped out a big hill close to home. If i put out the right amount of effort to reach the top totally gassed, and then walk to the bottom (Knee saver) then how many "laps" should be done? The hill I wi...

I cannot disagree that there are not some risks with the type of training I did - although it was only my second marathon where I had my break through so veteran??? For my first marathon I did a gentler and kinder version of that kind of training. To be more specific, a medium length slow run follow...

Make that three - the fast finish is one way to do it. The way I did it was a warm up of 1 -3 K and then marathon pace and then a proper cool down, hydrate, take in protein and ice the legs. Another suggestion is the run a shorter run at race pace - say 5 - 8 K or so in your case on Saturday and the...

A "junk" mile is more of a catch all phrase to describe a run/job without a specific purpose. There are LSD (Long Slow Distance Runs), tempo runs, intervals and/or speed work, hills, etc. A junk mile is just some running/jogging done to build up the miles for that week - some programs incorrectly ca...

Calgary Races (Very Long)
St Patrick' Day Race in March - 5 and 10K races. Organized by the Calgary Road Runners - well run race although there was a bit of confusion the year that I ran it because they had to move the start line. Long Sleeved t-shirt, good food and gold, silver and bronze medals for the top three finishers ...

Been there, done that, have the t-shirt and now just slowly coming back. And if you think you had it bad, despite walking like a crippled 80 year old for the first week, qualifying for Boston made me feel like I was walking on air. Second week, feeling really good so why not rush back into temp runs...

1) In a race - I tell myself my legs are strong, I am well prepared plus since I have told all of my family and coworkers my goal time, I think of the "shame" in not making my time because I was alittle tired and sore. Plus, I also think if there is only 20, 10, 5, 1 Ks left to go, the faster I do t...

I need info on this, I just finished my first half and plan to do a full marathon next year- giving myself a whole year to plan, this way I plan to do my long runs every second week that way I'll have longer to be ready and on the non-long run week I'll still do 10-15k as a longer run on my non-lon...

My two cents - to finish a marathon injury free - run every other day. I also believe it is essential to complete as many Long Slow Runs as possible - run slower than marathon pace and use walk breaks - the Galloway 10/1 or whatever suits you - I am currently on 15/20-30seconds but whatever works fo...

3. Keep your goals in mind: if you're trying to BQ or have a huge PB then maybe only 3 days of running isn't going to cut it. 4. Make sure the three runs you do are QUALITY workouts: LSD (obviously), Speed or Hills and maybe a shorter tempo-run. There's no room for "junk miles" in a 3-day program. ...

A word of warning about the Yasso 800s: A person who can run a 3:15 marathon can easily complete a 3:15 Yasso session but the reverse does not necessarily hold true. It is a tool to see how the training is going, a speed test. But of course! Training is always fluid project, continually changing. T...

Race pick up Friday night and Saturday. Re: Three-day training plan
This month's Runner's World has a story that trumpets the benefits of 3-day-a-week marathon training vs. the 4 or 5 days many of us do. As one who is injured due to overtraining, I am curious about this plan for when I can run again. Any thoughts? I am a 41 year old runner who started running races...
