Running in Burnaby

Postby DougG » Thu Mar 31, 2011 7:14 pm

I will be in Burnaby for 4 - 7 days starting May 18 for a Habitat conference. Are there any 5 - 10k races on around then? Can someone recommend any good running spots? Thanks. :)

I will be staying at the Delta Burnaby Hotel & Conference Centre. I won't have a car from the 18-21, however after then if I need one I will get one. I arrive on the 18th, the conference is the 19th - mid day on the 21st.From then to Tuesday or Wednesday of that week I will have to myself. I've never been to BC and am looking forward to it! :D

You'll be close to Burnaby Lake which is 10K around. You can run to it from your hotel.
Would be nice if we could get a group together for a run. Are you in town through the weekend?

my new schedule gives me Saturday to Tuesday off every week, so let me know if you want someone to hang out with! I can come that way for a run, or play tour guide if you want one. :)

Unfortunately the Delta Burnaby is in a bit of a no man's land for pedestrians. It is about a km from Brentwood which is the closest Skytrain. There is regular bus service to Metrotown and the main skytrain route as the hotel is close to BCIT.

For running, the closest bike/running path is the Central Valley Greenway (aka the Greyway as it is pretty industrial in that area). The Greenway can take you west to Vancouver and False Creek (about 8 km) or east to Burnaby Lake (about 4-5 km to the lake and then the Burnaby Lake loop is about 9 km). The closest nice run is Deer Lake which is about 2 km away and which is a 5 - 6 km loop. (Yes I run a lot in this area).

If we can arrange a get together, I am available on Sunday's or most any evening that week. Alternatively, I could give you a lift up to Metrotown for a Sunday morning run with my peeps - Bonsor Breakfast Club - we usually do 8 - 10 km from Metrotown west to Commercial Drive or east to New Westminster Quay. It might be time for them to do a Burnaby Lake run and potluck.

Marymac, I think you mean Gilmore Skytrain might be closer to the Hotel (about a Km), rather then Brentwood as it is a little further away plus there's the hill up Willingdon to deal with.

I live a stones throw from the Hotel and would be happy to drive if I'm available for a run on Sunday. Keep in mind I'm new to running and I'm working on my speed. Marymac is one of my leaders for the upcoming Sun Run.

If you can get yourself to the Skytrain, head downtown to Waterfront and run the Seawall around Stanley Park. Burnaby Lake is great but for a middle-of-the-continent guy who's never been to Vancouver, the Seawall will be an unforgettable experience. It'll be worth the time you spend on the train.

Definitely the Seawall is worth running - the Skytrain is only about a 30 minute ride (unfortunately from Gilmore station you will need to change trains at Commercial - no big deal and there are views from the train as well) to Waterfront station.

I concur with Turd, I've live in Vancouver for almost 15yrs and the seawall is still great anytime of the year, a MUST see & do. Burnaby Lake is fun too, I did a 5K race with my clinic back on Feb 27th, fun run, even with a half a foot of snow on the ground.

Yup, I agree with this one too. :)

I love running the Seawall in Vancouver (not just in Stanley Park but in and around False Creek and English Bay, too). Every time I do (which is for most of my long runs and many others) I feel like I'm on vacation in my home town. And I've lived here for almost 16 years.

I'd love to meet up for a run or coffee sometime, Doug.

Me three. Did the seawall around Stanley Park and False Creek today under blue skies. You'd love it.
