Fartlek

Postby Karin » Tue Aug 02, 2005 7:45 am

Hey everyone.

I'm not technically IN the 10 km clinic at the RR, but I'm following the program. So, tomorrow night we're supposed to do Fartlek(s). I can only assume that this was explained in the clinic.
Can anyone here please tell me what a Fartlek is?? I know it's some kind of speedwork (which I've never done before) but with a name like that, there has to be more to it.

Thanks
Karin

Fartlek Run. This is a speed play workout in which you alternate running fast and slow according to how you feel. It's a good way to get in a speed workout without going to a track.

If you are in a group, let each participant lead, alternatively, each doing their own thing, distance, pace, etc... and the others just follows ....

I thin k fartlek is the adult equivalent to "Race you to the streetlight!" "Race you to the stop sign!"

If you're running by yourself I'd think it might be hard to do Fartleks ( fart... hee hee). It might be easier to go to a track OR if you have a garmin, to do a few fast stretches within an 8 or 9K run that are 400 or 800 m (say 4 400's and 3 800's). You could do 2K to warm up, the workout (about 5K) and 2K to cool down.

I do all my fartlek stuff while playing soccer. Either in a game, or just solo kicking the ball around. Best form of fartlek I've ever done.
