Try you local massage therapy college - when I was having insurance issues, that is where I went (treated by students) as the cost is much lower (can't claim on insurance though).

So I went for a non-sports massage last night and it was good! She spent time on body parts that usually get overlooked by my regular guy who is so focused on my hamstrings, glutes, hip flexors, piriformis, and IT band. I was amazed at how great it felt to have my feet, arms and hands worked on.

Have a question for you Terri ... In Ontario do you need to be a certified RMT and/or be currently enrolled in a RMT program to practice massage therapy for $$$ in the Province... What about those certified in another Province, aka Quebec ? I realize one can charge whatever they want, though their is some sort of set rates, correct? and may not be able to provide receipts for insurance purposes etc.

Ontario works on a protected title basis. Only those therapists that successfully pass their Ontario Board Certification Exams and register with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) may use the following protected titles:

Massage Therapist
M.T.
Registered Massage Therapist
R.M.T
Massage Therapy
Therapeutic Massage
Massothérapeute
Massothérapie
Massage Therapeutique

Anyone can set up shop and 'rub people' but you can't call it Massage Therapy (or any of the above listed things).

If you are a student at a recognized institution of learning it is frowned upon to accept cash for massage during your training. The CMTO may delay or deny your registration claiming that it demonstrates 'poor professional decision making'.

Quebec is an unregulated province. Anything goes there. But if one trains in Quebec, if they hope to practice in Ontario (or BC or Newfoundland) they will likely have to return to school and they will most definitely have to write a licensing exam.

As a follow up to the above post one should consider the risk of unlicensed health practitioners:

1) If harm is done to you there is no regulatory body to complain to and no one to discipline the incompetent
2) There is no need for the practitioner to carry insurance. As a condition of my license I must carry a minimum of 2 million personal and commercial liability insurance (i.e. 'malpractice' and 'slip and fall')
3) They are not required to adhere to provincial legislation regarding privacy/confidentiality of your records or your personal information.

Thanks for the information ... kinda what I suspected ...

Someone from my running team is taking her biomechanics, whatever course at UofO and I guess taken some massage classes, as well and may have taken some sort of course in Gatineau and claims to be certified ... but, wanting to offer discounted services in Ottawa side, to raise funds for her new bike and possible donation to a charity ... My shop is moving to a new location this summer and plans to offer up a one stop fitness and lifestyle to supplement their bike/running/triathlon retail services, with an inhouse RMT, PT, etc. who would rent out space ... They currently have at least 2 RMT's planning to open shop there and the owner was told by at least one of them that it would not be a good thing, to have an uncertified massage practitioner workout out at the same premises, for those reasons that you noted above ...

As tempting as it is for discounted massage services, I will stay with mine that I can trust and gotten me through the past 5-10+ years in my training, thank you ...

It also doesn't make a lot of business sense and the two RMTs may feel that the unlicensed 'massage practitioner' may be undercutting them. What might be likely to happen is the uninsured will go for the 'cheap' and those with insurance want the RMT receipt in order to make a claim.
