Starting again

Postby braveheart » Fri May 08, 2009 2:18 pm

Ok got the clearance to run with this fracture heals. Other than the sweat in the cast causing it to stink, can anyone think of other issues I might face running with a cast for 4+(?) weeks (other than falling!)?

There's an article about that on 'Run The Planet'
http://www.runtheplanet.com/trainingracing/injury/armcast.asp

I had my wrist (hand to forearem) in a cast many years ago, but I wasn't running back then, and had no trouble following my doc's advice to "take it easy while it heals". :D

Good luck.

 I didn't have any problem with that advice when I had a broken arm, either.

Are you planning to run, Lesley? I walked 7.5k yesterday and feel like I've fractured my hips ... Clearly I need to work on my endurance again. At least I can blame part of it on being pregnant ;)

5.48K done (thought my route was 6!) and it went ok. I covered it in saran wrap as it has been raining today. It felt ok, no pain but fingers started to swell a bit by the end.

Using the hairdryer to dry the sweat inside.

Congrats on the run. How's the arm today Lesley?
I hope you were able to dry your cast out OK.

arm was a bit sore at night but seemed be ok this morning. On the 5K family walk it was a pain in the butt. It was more like chafing issues.

Sorry to hear this chafing problem. Is it a plaster or fiberglass cast?
Thanks for answering so quickly.

Thanks for checking in on me.

It is a fibreglass with the sleeve thing underneath and I guess just walking today something chafed...might try to put a little chamois butter along the rim next time.

I had a fiberglass cast as well and got terrible chafing. I think it's just a fact of life with casts when you're not a couch potato. Okay, so I was a couch potato and still got chafing.

Way to go for getting out there! I saw your FB photos and I've got to say you've done RM proud with the colour of the cast :)
