NCM 5K

Postby Kelodie » Sat May 09, 2009 11:01 am

The NCM weekend has always been my favorite running weekend of the year. A year ago, I got injured and couldn't partake in the races. A year later, this injury still hasn't completely recovered and I added a whole lot more injuries to the mix.

I had been thinking of registering for the 5K race and walk it, to try to exorcise my anger about all the stuff that's happened to me in the last year. I want to tell life that this is it, I don't want anymore accidents or injuries.

However, I'm worried that I won't be satisfied with walking the 5K. I'm holding on right now and I'm not too depressed. I'm afraid that walking the 5K will make me angrier instead of helping me make peace with my bad luck.

I'm curious to know what you guys would do if you were me.

I voted "no". If you want to be part of the festivities, you can volunteer - I'd get far more joy from participating in everyone else's race as a volunteer than doing a race I'm ambivalent about.

I voted YES ... only because I am considering walking the 5K at the Scotiabank Half Marathon in June. I would much rather run but can't right now - so at least I get to have some fun and participate in some way.

However, I will be walking with a few friends so they will keep me entertained.

There's nothing wrong with going down and cheering on the other Maniacs. They appreciate your presence more than you appreciate not running, I'm sure. ((((((HUGS))))))

I voted yes.

I couldn't run OR walk this past Sunday in Vancouver because of my injury, but if I could walk I would have. I would have loved to have been out there. But if you think that you might resent it more, then volunteering is a good option.

I hear you on your frustration, because I am there now. It's been on and off for a couple years for me, but I have now resigned myself to getting rid of the negativism. It's easy to be angry and cry "why me" all the time (I know because I have), but it really doesn't do much. Focus on what you CAN do and move forward.

This is difficult for me to help with but the gist of things is that I think if you can walk it without risk of worsening an injury than go for it. That's what I would do if it was an event that I really wanted to take part in.

I registered! JF will walk/run it with me. After all, he suffered as much as I did from all my injuries in the past year!

In those 12 months, there must have been a good 3 months when I couldn't walk. Walking is a privilege, but we often take it for granted. I think that walking that 5K will be my way of showing my gratefulness at being able to walk that distance. Walking it with JF will be the icing on the cake.

I was going to post this, even before I read your last post.

Walk it as a show of gratitude that you can walk. You can't run...and that is a shame. But focussing on what you can do is better for you than not doing what you love because it can't be the way it used to be.

My daughter's friend got run over by a school bus 3 weeks ago and had to have his leg amputated. I thought about him a lot during my race last weekend. It helped me put it all in perspective.

So sorry to hear about your daughter's friend Christiana.

You might enjoy these lyrics Kelodie. They certainly speak to me....

Walk In The Sunshine
-- The Grateful Dead

Look out cause here comes some free advice.

Walk in the sunshine, watch for the bright sun,
Be all those things you're able to be.

You got to listen to the heavens, you got to try to understand,
The grateness of their movement is just as small as it is grand.

Try not to hurry, it's just not your worry.
Leave it to those all caught up in time.

You got to deep-six your wristwatch, you got to try and understand,
The time it seems to capture is just the movement of its hands.

I'm very sorry about this. When I had my bike accident, at first I didn't realize the consequences could have been much worse. I fell on my face and I could have broken my neck. If that had happened, I'd be very happy just to be able to walk.

Also, I remembered last week when I couldn't walk and how frustrating it was. How I only wish I could walk. Now, I can walk and I stopped being grateful for it. It's time for a reality check! It's time I give thanks again for my ability to walk!

BEST DECISION EVER. I ran/walked the 5K tonight and it was awesome! I'm shocked at my fitness level, because I thought it would be much lower.

I didn't even PW... on about 12K in training since January, and before that, no more than 50K since April 2008. This is pretty awesome!
