Rattled them Bones indeed
Event: Rattle me Bones 10k – Oct 26/08
I wanted to run a 10km after the PEC marathon to see what my new 10km time is after 2 years and 2 marathons since my last one. I ran with no IPOD or Garmin, just me, my bones and I. Race plan was race hard and make sure I felt uncomfortable and at every k, make sure I still felt uncomfortable. Looking at last year's results, I also wanted to place in the top 100.
The start was late and they spent way to much time introducing people I didn’t care about and talked way too much. The nice thing was that the race raised over $450k for the hospital. Seeded myself about 10-15 rows back as this was a gun time race and it was very congested. After the start, I weaved my way through people and it cleared up nicely by the time we got out of the hospital grounds. After the first couple of km, I was feeling uncomfortable. The next couple of km, I was still feeling uncomfortable and wondering if I should ease up. People were passing me so I told myself that slowing up was unacceptable, not an option. Every km I had to talk myself out of slowing so I believed I was hitting the right pace. I have to admit it was very unsettling running without a Garmin and not knowing what pace I was going or my splits. But I was too afraid to slow down and kick myself at the end, so I kept pushing. At around 8km, there is a slight uphill and I pushed harder though it and then the 10k course merged with the 5km. Disaster!! All the walkers were clogging everything down and I had to race in the right lane to keep my pace with volunteer asking me to stay left to not get hit by cars (didn’t listen). Joe took my picture and I drove it home for a time of 26:xx ?!?! Stupid clock, it was showing the 5km times, I didn’t know my result, if I did well, PBed or not…a very weird feeling.
But I smoked it! 43:41, pace of 4:23, a PB of 2m8s. I also placed 86/461 & 27/96 for Men 30-39. Mission accomplished. I'm scared what the race calculator is going to tell me my marathon time should be now...
Good Maniac support, a good race and a great M&G afterwards. This one could become an annual event.

Congratulations on such an amazing PB. Obviously that really means Mission Accomplished. Next time make sure to bring some ear plugs, so you don't have to listen to the introduction of people that nobody cares about!!

Great race, Lorne. Good work keeping the pace despite how you felt, and better still conquering the merge.
Nice PB to boot!

Pretty speedy indeed! I'm sure you can see on the PB page that is faster than a lot of us. It just goes to show your potential; if you put in some miles your half and full marathon times will fall in line.
next up:

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Nice time, Lorne! I wasn't sure if you would have the legs for it so soon after the marathon, but you obviously did.
It predicts exactly what I would have thought (and remember telling you a few weeks before your marathon) based on the paces of your marathon training (but you'd have to do more mileage ).

I am very happy that you accomplished what you set out to do today.
Pretty scary (i'm sure) not knowing how you are doing time wise, but obviously you knew to keep pushing despite the uncomfortable feeling.
So, 3:30 NCM next year???

Congratulations to you and Mich on doing so well. It was really great meeting you and Mich! Hopefully we could do this again.

My favorite race calculator puts you at a 3:25 for the marathon now.
Great job.
