Taking the plunge into the unknown...
Well, this weekend was momentous on a number of levels.
On Saturday I set out for a 31 mile run, ended up cutting it short at about 27 because of frost-bite on my finger. It's fine now, and in fact so is everything else! I have been struggling with the feeling of an impending injury the last few weeks, but I realized late in the past week that a lot of that was just the normal soreness of training being 'exaggerated' in my mind by my own neurotic thoughts of self doubt. This run was the 'breakthrough' I needed to convince myself of what was possible. I hadn't ran that far since the summer's epic 33 mile trail run and neither my calf nor my adductor even had a twinge of soreness.
What this run told me was that, YES, I was ready to tackle what has been an ominous goal for me since Aug of 2004 when a stress fracture sidelined me.
I am now officially registered for my first 100km ultra. 27 May, 5am; the Blackfoot Ultra.
There, I said it, can't take it back. In 88 days I will be either well on my way to becoming an ultramarathoner or else I'll be laying on a stretcher wondering what went wrong
Now, to plan one heck of a m&g in Edmonton for the end of May!

k, then I'll have to take Sunday off of work (not a problem, I'll take any excuse to get out of the sunday shifts!). I was just thinking that our ultramarathoners might be really EXHAUSTED on sunday!

This race is on a Saturday....
Okay, this could work out. I should be able to come out and cheer. Corporate challenge is on, but I usually have the first Saturday off. Sunday for a M&G might be a little trickier, because I have CC triathlon in the morning, and then my grandma's birthday, but I can make it work. I won't pass up the opportunity to meet some Maniacs from the 'Peg!

Wow, that is an amazing goal. I agree with Jo-Jo that you may be a bit nuts... but in a good way! Have fun training and good luck.

Thanks to all of you for the words of encouragement! Just like the fans cheering when you're slugging it out, the words do help.
I agree with Size5, Sunday is the way to go for the m&g. Is there a place with lazee-boy recliners?
And yes, QuickChick & Jo-Jo, I am a bit off my rocker, but I'm OK with it:-)
Lots of training miles to go between now & then though!

Dwayne - I'm so glad to hear that your Ultra plans are back on track. I still remember that measly 10k run you did with me two summers ago, and then finding out muc later that it was your last run for ages due to injury. Way to keep the dream alive!!!

Pam, I remember that run quite well too.. knowing that I did that (plus I ran to & from the park that night, another 15k round trip) with a stress fracture, thinking it was just 'sore' definately fine tuned my ability to listen to my body. I even walked the mile to my physio the next day thinking that the walk would help 'loosen' me up, ugh.

Barely a half marathon difference between our events Where is the Sulpher Springs race at? What sort of plan are you following? I'm using the Hal Higdon Comrades Marathon plan, with a few modifications based on some input from a couple ultra runners I've met.
Hey, if the dark siders have a group of their own, maybe there should be a "extra maniac" group too
Enjoy the training, enjoy the race,
