ORW Weather Forecast . . .

Postby NMG » Sun May 22, 2016 8:29 am

I'm 99.7% confident that it's not going to be PB like conditions for me

Saturday they are calling for 28 with a humidex of 36 and a 60% chance of showers, with lows of 16. Sunday they are calling for 25 with a humidex of 31 and a 40% chance of showers, with lows of 17. Wind is 15K both days.

So happy I'll only be suffering for 10K. Please at least let there be lots of cloud cover, LOL!

This morning they changed it to 31 with showers on Saturday and rain on Sunday ... by the end of the week who knows what we'll have

This happens every year! Very glad I opted for Toronto marathon this year - if not because of actual temps, but because it saves me the anxiety!

I can run for 2 hrs in anything. If I was doing the marathon it would be a different story. I just don't want to sight see in the rain all weekend.

+1 I love ORW but the inevitable rise in temps makes it a tough race for PBs.

Ottawa Race Weekend Fun Fact: Despite the change in temperature, the Beau's Beer after the race in the beer garden will be the same temperature.

It seems to be an issue every year. Fortunately it is still early enough in the week that the forecast could change a bit. For the marathon the last two years the conditions have been decent to start but was hot by the time I reached 30-32 km. It can make for a tough race but I wouldn't miss it.

Canalrunner makes an important point as well. Beau's in the beer garden is something to look forward to after the race.

I am not sure I want to run my first marathon in those conditions. We have already said it will not be a race and we will be doing a Sunday slow pace. I have ran the last 2 years and the weather was brutal for the half so hopefully we will be almost done before it gets too hot.
Next up:

Feb 2015 - Castaway Key 5k
March 2015 - St. Patrick's Day 10k
May 2015 - ORW 1/2 Marathon

I popped on this morning thinking 'hopefully it has improved' only to find predicted high (including humidity) of 41C! Seriously? 26C at 9AM, 33C at 11AM 36C by noon ...

Got this in my e-mail today from Run Ottawa (just part of the message):

"We have been watching the weather forecast closely and hoping for cooler temperatures for the weekend. Unfortunately, the current forecast is calling for highs of over 30 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, which raises serious concerns around heat related illnesses, especially for our longer events.

Note: Please watch your email inboxes and follow our Twitter and Facebook accounts for further event updates.
We are still hoping for a change in the weather and that temperatures will stay moderate enough for a safe event. We have also put the message out to the community to have hoses and sprinklers out along the race courses.

However, we also need to be prepared for the worst, which is the possibility of a cancellation if temperatures pose a serious safety risk. The safety of our runners is paramount. That will be a decision that I make along with our Medical Director.

We will be posting weather updates on social media, as well as using our system of weather flags which are on the race site and along the course. All participants should familiarize themselves with the EAS system prior to the race and remain alert for directions from race officials and take precautions to properly prepare for varying conditions on race day."

Stay tuned!

Small world: the guy in the article's main picture lived across the street from me a few years ago.

Back in 1999, the Edmonton Marathon had the bright idea of scheduling a 5pm start on a Saturday afternoon in June so that runners could "race the twilight" and then have a good party after the race. Then we got a 30-something degree day. I lost 14 pounds of water jogging a 1:5x half marathon and the finish line looked like a military field hospital. I can only imagine how much worse things would have been with humidity. As a result, I wouldn't blame the race organizers for any preventative measures they take this weekend. Some of the US marathons I have run started at 6 in the morning for exactly this reason.

I am watching and concerned about the weather. Thing is I don't thermoregulate well since the brain surgery I had 10 years ago. And the meds I take don't help. But I am going up with 2 others and plan to walk it. However I have learned that walking does NOT equal easier or necessarily a lesser workout. I power through the walk and push it and ... it's tough going. So I am hoping for a weather change (which truly does not seem likely at this point) or a 7AM start at the latest for the half. Even then with humidity factored in it would be tough for the back of the pack ...

Many of my friends are saying "I'm glad I"m just doing the 5K or 10K" and I"m glad I"m not. late afternoon start = full heat!

I'm glad I'm not a race director!

I wonder if they'd start the half marathon earlier than planned (e.g., at 7:30 instead of 9:00), or even start the marathon at 6:30. It's certainly light enough at that time.

While I will miss ORW, and pacing, I would be very nervous right now to pace even a slow marathon well

It's a hard call for sure. Ottawa is supposedly cooler than here (an hour south - we are already over 30 with humidity factored in and we were at 26 by 5:30AM) but tomorrow is supposed to be hotter than today. At least they are now saying 20kph winds which would help. But also thunderstorms moving in by 10am tomorrow. I am going with 2 friends who are determined to go and I am the driver which is pressuring me to go but I am also worried. I do not tolerate heat well and I know first hand it hits out of nowhere even with the best of precautions ...

Start times for the 10K and 1/2 have been modified. Got this about an hour ago in my e-mail:

START TIMES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Saturday, May 28, 2016:
2K – 3:00 p.m.: (no change)
5K – 4:00 p.m.: (no change)
10K – 7:00 p.m. (original time was 6:30 p.m.)

Sunday, May 29, 2016:
Marathon – 7:00 a.m. (no change)
Kids Marathon – 8:00 a.m.: (no change)
*Half Marathon – 8:15 a.m. (original time was 9:00 a.m.)

*For the Half Marathon event, runners are urged to start at the earlier time. Runners who are unaware of the time change may start the half marathon at 9:00 a.m.

We will be watching all medical issues closely and making decisions on whether to stop the races based on volumes in our medical operations. Please pay close attention to the weather warning flags along the course. If the flags turn black, be prepared to stop.
