Re: The Thursday Thread
I've been babysitting some kind of throat infection/cold bug the last couple of days, so I'm going to take another day off running. Next week is the "official" taper week before the Hypo, so I'm just going to call it a longer taper. I'll run easy tomorrow on the tm and try to get a couple ...

Re: Winter Monday
Coldest day so far this winter here in Hfx. Rest day is on the sched for me, but I will probably sneak in a half-hour row tonight in the comfort of my basement.

That should thin out. Ours went from about 50 to a regular group of 15 - 20 pretty quickly. Many clinic nights have been under ten.

Re: Smilies Sunday!! :)
20 km done with the half clinic this morning on the Hypo Half route out in Shearwater. It was something like -12, but in the areas exposed to the sea breeze it got more than a little nippy. It's not a bad route, but could be devilishly cold if race day is windy. Did the run this morning in 1:57, a 5...

Mile repeats tonight. If the weather improves, I'll run with the RR club. If not, I'll hit the tm and watch tv. I hate running in the wind and I hate running in the rain. When it's rainy and windy and 3C, it's a trifecta! It's going to be hovering on the freezing point tonight, too... Might be slip...

6 km tempo with warmup and warmdown done at lunchtime in -6C sunny, windless weather. Halifax can be really nice in the winter, but tonight and tomorrow, when the rain takes away the little snow we have and tears apart my hopes for skating on Lake Banook I'll realize why I really do loathe winter he...

Interesting article on orthotics
Do they work or don't they? http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/18/health/nutrition/18best.html. I don't wear them and have no real opinion, but it's an interesting question.

It's -11 here this morning, but we're supposed to be getting rain by tonight. That said, 6 km tempo will be done at lunchtime rather than waiting til later.

Re: Discomfort in the shoulders
Welcome Norm! Shoulder tension is not uncommon in runners, particularly those just getting going. I certainly suffered from it as well. For me the key was to concentrate not on my shoulders but on my fingers. It was common for me to start clenching my fists as I got tired, and this tension eventuall...

No running on the sched today - recovery after yesterday's 18km. I'll row a bit tonight while I catch up on last weeks' Daily Show. I love my DVR.

Skipped last night's easy run as I had a krappy sleep the night before and forgot that today was blood donor clinic day at my office. No run today as I'm a pint lighter.

Re: Question on FIRST training program
Thanks, LadyV. I had checked the website for the coaching the other day and wondered what it entailed. It sounds like you get pretty good support for the money, but alas, I can't really justify the expenditure right now. That said, in an effort to force myself to cross-train more, I think I'm going ...

Re: Question on FIRST training program
Monkey, Jen beat me to it. Yes, follow her link and feel the burn! I've done the rowing workout a couple times and it is HARD. This really is a five day training program - the cross-training isn't an 'off day' easy workout, which is why the easy run as a cross training day substitute in Angela's lin...

Re: Question on FIRST training program
Thanks for your comments, LadyV; it's nice to hear from someone who has used the program. From reading the book, one of the points I had gathered was the importance of only running three days per week - that was why I was surprised to see Ang's link that light running could count as "cross-trai...

it's a big gimicky. I love science, but I'm not sure that running should be called "scientific running." And it makes it sound like they have all the answers.

Easy 3K today. Trying out the VFF's two days in a row caught up with me. I felt great both days - all day - but the following day my legs protested  So today I put my shoes on and took it easy working out the muscles. l was surprised to find a notable difference running in my shoes vs the VFF...
