Run-commuting

I've run commuted and bike commuted for years. My mode and distance will change according to my training cycle and mood. A decent pack is a must. I have a Deuter pack that I love. I have a physical check list that I go through each morning - saves on forgotten wallets, keys and pass cards. After wor...

Good job on racing anyway.

I saw you go by at the finish. I recognized the name and said to my SO, "hey that's the kid who posts on Runningmania". :)

Re: The runners wave?

I usually nod and people acknowledge me back. There are a lot of runners in my area (mid town Toronto) and if I actually waved at everyone, my hand would be flopping around constantly. When I run near my parents' place in Mississauga I get a lot of blank confused looks back.

Re: Top 10 running fashion faux pas

I always notice the hair! I've seen a few women on really hot day with long thick hair not tied up...don't get it... I've done that. Usually it has occurred when I have a post work run scheduled and I either forgot my elastic or it broke and I also didn't have a ball cap with me to use to tuck my h...

Re: Niagara 50km (2013)

Thanks, guys! I'll get to it this afternoon. I have participated in the Niagara Falls Marathon in October before, but this one in a few weeks appears to be a much smaller and scaled back event. I just wanted a marathon somewhat close by since I'm missing Grandma's :) Something to keep in mind for n...

5Peaks Rattlesnake - June 8

This is one of my favorite races but I have to miss it this year because I'm not running much due to injury and because its my SO's birthday. More the former than the latter. He's all for being a Sherpa. :) I might be late to the Jays game as I can't leave until after the awards ceremony as my driv...

Congratulations Sylvie! That is a great report and an inspirational race. You looked strong each time you came through the start/finish (I was there until about 4pm).

Great race report!

I was in DC the prior weekend (as you know) and the helicopters along the Potomac were pretty consistent.

Re: Phone apps vs. GPS watches

Those of you who've had luck, do you think it depends on the type of iPhone or is it more the software? My only experience with using MapMyRun resulted in a GPS track that went through the middle of a pond when the pond wasn't frozen. I've been a bit reluctant to use MapMyRun after that experience. ...

The way I read the article, you make up your own route. I haven't checked for a restaurant website with any "rules".

Re: Should Women's Boston Qualifying Times be Revised?

Let me restate that. If anyone feels the standards are unfair or too easy, come back with concreate proof, not impressions.

If Laura or anyone else has a problem with my response, they can take it up with me privately.

Re: Should Women's Boston Qualifying Times be Revised?

This is why I come off so arrogant (or something) about qualifying times. Post 50, I've qualified twice with a 3:57 and 3:51. Since I didn't do any speedwork or even attempt to train for a BQ, and I think 9 min miles are not that special, I don't think BQ is that special. otoh, I know 50 yos who ru...

Re: Training Paces

My club coach recommends 20 minutes of hard running per week when you are doing intervals, so if you are doing 4 minute repeats, you do five of them, 2 minute repeats, you do 10, etc. Rest is half the time of the work. Mile repeats are long, I'm not sure that wouldn't fall under a different category...

Re: Running and Weight Loss (Nancy Clarke)

My personal experience is that 1) my food intake will adjust to my energy output and 2) if I have wide variations in energy output, it is harder to moderate intake.

The result is that my weight is lowest when my day to day exercise is consistent (1-2 hours per day).
