Personally, I wouldn't count Powderface since the course is long (I got about 44k and so did everyone I talked to) and of course not like any road marathon! Now that Calgary is moving to May, I'm hoping to run Powderface next year. You're right that it's not a typical marathon. Put it on the list, ...

MichaelMc - A true "Alberta slam" would also have included Lethbridge (a week after Red Deer) and Ft. McMurray in the second week in September. But hey, winning three marathons in this province in one year is certainly nothing to sneeze at! Don't forget Lakeland (Vermilion in May), Footstoc...

Loop The Lake race report
Well, it's been five weeks since my last marathon and that was making me cranky. Loop The Lake is another one of those small races that I like so much. The lake in question is Windermere, just across the BC border southwest of Banff. To "loop the lake" completely was a task for the half-dozen runner...

Ooh, I love running laps senselessly, having done in the last year: (1) 211 laps around the 200m running track at a nearby hockey rink (2) 20 laps (through a foot of snow) around the 2.1K trail encircling a nearby lake (3) 106 laps around the high-school track Unfortunately, August 31 is exactly one...

Though, I must admit it's been mostly tapering and recovering between marathons since May .... In effect, I built my base/foundation during the winter months and living off the laurels of my marathons, over the past 3-4 months ... :? I agree with this completely. It remains an open question to me a...

 Could you lay out what 1 week looks like for a 160k week. I just can't visualize it  I don't have my running log handy right now, so I'll try to reconstruct this from memory: July 8: 17K of easy running to loosen up the legs after the Calgary marathon on the 6th. July 9: Some interva...

As one of the high-mileage runners here, I'll chip in: Higher training volumes, in my experience, are usually a consequence of higher fitness, and not the cause. Another way to look at this is that this year's training is next year's base, so you're looking at much more than an isolated 18-week prog...

I agree with Michael on the hill tactics. The funny thing is that the two biggest ones (Groat and MacKinnon) behave very differently depending on whether you run the half or the full. In the half, you're running a lot closer to threshold and the length of Groat can really get you into trouble. On th...

I have two: (1) Ran my first marathon in 1997 on absolutely zero training (quite literally my first run of the year), as I stumbled across the race expo and thought "how hard could it be?" and...how much did it hurt?? Between the cotton T-shirt, the $20 running shoes, the 1:1s I was doing from 25K ...

cgraham : glad to hear the MP run turned out well. I find that it takes a few attempts to get this workout right and that it is as much mental as physical. Some additional thoughts/opinions about MP: (1) The pace is always hard to decide when you're not through with most of your training. I'll go w...
